id rate him above average, but not great. slam him all you want, but 5 post season appearances in the last 8 years is a far cry from alot of other franchises out there.

It's about results... and he's consistently gotten them. Even this year without Bagwell, we're in the hunt. I can't complain. With the beautiful stadium and the team's success, this has been the best decade in Astros history.

id say above average, hes done a lot of good for this team, but he meddles a little too much for my liking. granted if i owned the astros so would i, at least he kept them in houston.

I say he's average. I think he's done well with building the new stadium and I think he cares more about the fan than Dr. McMullen but at the same time, I think Drayton has gotten in the way of some good baseball people doing their jobs.

He's better than average. For all those years when he refused to throw lots of money at free agents (like the big-market teams), we called him cheap. But we have had only terrible contract to deal with, whereas many of the huge deals of the past have blown up in the other owners' faces. Those contracts would have crippled us. We did just fine without Mike Hampton, etc. This and a strong farm system are the reasons for our success. Now that the free agent playing field is slightly more even, the grocer can continue pursuing players and getting the most value out of them like he has in the past.

Above average.
Should probably interfere less with baseball matters. Is probably overfond of the big splashy move, especially when guys have a Texas connection...but right now that is working to our advantage with Roger and Andy arguably putting up career years. My only real negative is he will spend huge bucks in one area, and try to get it back skimping on stuff that can win a lot of games. (solid middle relief only costs a little more than spotty middle relief, relatively speaking) "If you fill your barn with grain, you get mice. If you leave it empty you get actors."

Depends on what you are looking for in an answer.?
I think he is one of the worst owners in MLB. I think he understands baseball less than any other owner in the league. He just does not get it. He had a GM like Hunsicker for most of his run. I think in terms of cheerleader and buisnessman, he is an above average owner, but I have to say I am no fan of Uncle Drayton. If he still owns the team in 5 years(HOPE NOT) and Tim Pup is still the GM, I think many of your ratings will be below average. "DOME FOAM" Coldest foam in the dome. I do miss that.

I think he's above average and getting better and smarter baseball wise. I think it's fine that he runs the team on a budget, and we've developed some nice talent over the years.
I think Purpura's real test will come this offseason, to see what he does to help shore up the weak spots on the team. |

I think his record speaks well. Even though Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S., we are well below that as a media market and that means less money. He has done well with a mid-market team, and spent just as much if not more than other teams in similar markets.
