Rotoworld Showing Love for Puma |
Lead | |
|
"Lance Berkman hit his 10th homer of the season while also collecting three more hits and four RBI against the Brewers on Sunday.
Berkman walked, singled, and doubled twice in addition to his homer. With 10 homers only Chase Utley has more in all of the majors. His 31 RBI is also second
in the majors to Josh Hamilton's 33. It appears last season's down year due to a poor start was a fluke, not the start of his
decline."..........

If Lance Berkman can keep it up...
I may start to sing and dance like Elvis Presley during the summertime. I know Lance Berkman can do it, because I've seen him do it on TV before.

I love Lance-a-lot!!!
Great sign today during the game. Hey, when it was time to tie up this game, I said, "There is no other Astro I want in this situation, than Lance." I love Miggy and Lee, etc. But, in that crucial situation, I wanted Lance. |

That two-out, game-tying bases loaded RBI walk Lance Berkman drew in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 6 apiece was such a clutch at-bat. Not only did
he draw a huge walk on a full count, but he had fouled off a couple of tough pitches in the process.
It was like Lance Berkman wasn't to be denied in that situation! Lance Berkman is arguably the MVP of the National League right now, but he needs to keep it going and the Astros have to keep winning in order for him to warrant serious consideration for the 2008 NL MVP award in 2008.

Miguel Tejada is second or third on my overall list.

I love Berkman and Tejada, too, and right not they're in the MVP discussion. However, I don't think that they're 1 + 2 (in fact they may not even
be the best two man combo in the league). There are a lot of hitters hitting the cover off the ball this year. Check out these stats (in my current MVP
order):
Chase Utley .357 13HR 26 RBI Chipper Jones .425 9 HR 27 RBI Lance Berkman .325 10HR 31 RBI Pat Burrell .330 9HR 30 RBI Albert Pujols .358 6HR 23 RBI (.518 OBP!!!) Xavier Nady (?!) .347 4HR 30 RBI Miguel Tejada .349 5HR 25 RBI Derek Lee .339 8HR 23 RBI I'd have to say that it's going to be hard to beat Utley this year... |

In 2006, Lance Berkman finished 3rd in the NL MVP voting with 21 third-place votes and 230 points total. Ryan Howard won the NL MVP that year with 20
first-place votes, 12 second-place votes and 388 points. Albert Pujols finished 2nd with 12 first-place votes, 19 second-place votes and 347 points.
I remember having a conversation with Clack back in spring training a few months ago, and I told him Lance Berkman was going to have a huge 2008 season -- along the lines of 2006. Lance Berkman will definitely finish in the top 3 of the NL MVP voting this year. All he has to do is continue to do what he's doing. Looking at Masstro's list, there's no question all of those guys will eventually cool off ( Xavier Nady and Pat Burrell especially ), but I can see three or four of those guys being consistently awesome all season long. I also agree that Chase Utley is hitting out of his mind right now. Unfortunately for the Phillies, their big guy Ryan Howard is off to a slow start this season. He does have 6 home runs, but his batting average ( .167 ) and his OPS ( .645 ) are both way down this year. It's only early May though, and a lot can certainly change in time. I've been impressed with Derrek Lee of the Cubs for a few years now.

MVP is a long way off... I am curious to see if either one gets voted onto the All-Star team. While I have no doubt that Berkman and probably Tejada will be
picked for the team (especially if they keep this up) I am curious to see who gets voted in. That said I have always been upset/jealous that players for the
Cubs and Cards always make the team before anyone else. Mets also seem to have this power. Case in point was the season that Rolen made the team instead of
Ensberg even though Ensberg was a possible MVP candidate and Rolen had only played something like 2 weeks due to injury. It took a miracle and Rolen dropping
out plus another guy dropping out before LaRussa picked Mo.
I really want to see some Astros get their due this season. I think if they keep hitting like this they should. Pujols is doing well enough that he will be the 1st sacker because he has name and a cardinals jersey but Tejada should be the starting shortstop in the N.L. I can't think of an N.L. shortstop that deserves it more right now. I own a Berkman jersey but some of the other guys are really making me want to rock a new jersey. I think I could handle a Tejada N.L. All Star Jersey. That would be fun. |

Albert Pujols .358 6HR 23 RBI (.518 OBP!!!)
Uh, the only reason Albert has that high a number for OBP is due to the intentional walks he is getting. Yes, it puts him on base, but they make it sound like he is getting a hit over half the time he goes to the plate and that just isn't the case. In fact, I read an article recently where it talked about his very deep discontent at being walked so often. But hey, his actual hitting numbers look great. |

Puma has been playing his butt off.
For all the criticism that many of of had for his pre-season remarks (myself included), he seem's to be taking the 'lead by example' route. Everyone has been saying that he looks like he's in a lot better shape this year, so he must have put in some extra work to make sure he didn't want to have another 2007 type season. I have no idea of what he says, or doesn't say in the locker room to his team mates, but I'm sure he appreciates the way this 2008 offense can always battle back. Hopefully he's gelling with the new guys on a personal level as well. (BTW- aren't we all glad that we wound up getting Valverde and not Gagne) I gotta give him props for sticking up for yesterday's "Steve Bartman" play. He said that he would've done the same thing if he were in the stands. |

i've gone down right by the dugout before BP whenever i've gone to the games and lance never was fat and he is the same size he was last year - well
give or take 5 or so pounds, who can tell with a man that big. people kept saying he was fat/out of shape last year because he had that10 week awful slump to
start the year. and yeah, he does weigh more than he did when he first came up 9 years back. you got me there.
- and yeah, that was the right thing to do about that kid - he had his back to the infield anyhow. lance has always seemed like a stand up guy |

As long as Pujols and Derrek Lee are healthy, they will be 1 and 2 in NL 1st Base All Star voting. Berkman will be lucky to make it as an add-on.
Tejada will probably have a much easier time being voted in at SS where his only real competition is Jose Reyes (remember, this is first about name ID and secondly about performance). Hanley Ramirez will also get consideration, particularly if he looks like the *only* Marlin selected.

Clack |

Furcal is putting up MVP offensive numbers (1.038 OPS) at shortstop right now. I doubt that those numbers hold up, but if they did, he likely would deserve an
All Star position.

I think it would be an absolute crime if Lance Berkman isn't starting at first base in the 2008 National League All-Star game, especially if he
continues to hit the ball at his torrid pace.
|
|||
Clack |
|||

Berkman's primary competitors for the starting 1st base job in the All Star game appear to be Pujols and Derek Lee. Pujols' numbers are very close to
Berkman's; so Lance will have to keep this pace up to have a chance. Unfortunately, Pujols and Lee probably have a better chance at winning the vote
because of Pujols's fame and the legion of Cubs' fan who will vote for Lee.
