Game 6 starter? |
Lead | |
|
If I were Scrap Iron, instead of starting Roger Clemens on 3 days rest in game 6, I would start Pete Munro. He had a respectable start in game 2 and deserves to start game 6. If Pete looks a bit shaky, I would pitch Clemens as my middle reliever. If Munro does well, we have a well rested Clemens for either game 7 - if needed, or game 1 in the WS. It would give Roy O an extra days rest as well.

Quote: That is the key right there. If Backe wins tonight then I see no reason not to use Munro. I know that may seem like rolling the dice but I think it would give us the best chance. The bullpen has gotten some rest the last two days and if Backe can be strong tonight and a day off tomorrow, we would be in our best position to use Munro with a rested pen. I know our pen is shaky but if you are going to have to use them, I would rather do it when they are rested. ______________________________________________________

Game Six Starter | ||

If Astros Lead 3-2
Game six won't be a must-win. Munro starts and the whole bullpen is available. If we have a chance to win this game then Garner should go for it even if that means Lidge pitching nine outs. Clemens and Oswalt shouldn't be used in this game however. That sets us up for Clemens starting game seven fully rested and Oswalt could be ready to come in if necessary. If we win tonight Garner can stack game seven so that only Clemens, Oswalt and Lidge pitch in it and I think that's what he should do. If Astros Trail 3-2 Game six is a must-win. Garner has to go with Clemens and hope the Rocket can get him six innings and a lead for the bullpen. At that point it's Wheeler and Lidge again I suppose. |

Not sure. Of course it depends on today's game, but what would be the point where you would pull Munro and bring in Roger?? Bases loaded 2 out 1st inning?? He gives up 3 runs in the 1st, does he pitch the 2nd??
I think I'd take Rocket on 3 days over anybody else on the staff every time. Munro can go game 2 of the Series. The rotation would probably be the same in the Series as it is now in the NLCS. Backe-game 1, Munro-2, Clemens-3 at home (full rest), RoyO-4 at home (full rest), Backe-5 at home (full rest), Clemens-6, (3 days rest), Oswalt-7 (3 days rest) Astros-RedSox World Series I started out with nothing...and I still have most of it. |

I think last night's game made it pretty clear that pitching on three day's rest doesn't do wonders for Oswalt. Granted he had full rest heading into that game, but it was fairly obvious he didn't have control or movement on any of his pitches and I think that's due to extended recovery time.
The effects of muscle failure are cumulative. Oswalt's control on his fastball was as bad as I've ever seen it. It was pretty flat too. The curveball was more effective, but it didn't have nearly as much spin, and therefore bite, as we're used to seeing from him. He actually threw four or five sliders tonight and his change, a true change, was actually present. If we're up 3-2 then there is little pressure on the Astros to win game six. It's a big game, but it's not "the" game and I think the Astros best chance to win the series at that point is to take one solid shot at it in game seven. If we do the three days rest thing again when it's not necessary we'll also see at least two innings of middle relief that will make us all sick. |

I agree with everything Redson said in his scenarios about being up 3-2 or down 3-2.
Logic, common sense, and statistics indicate that it should happen just that way, especially considering the potency of the Astros offense and that there is not one pitcher on the Cards staff who strikes any fear in the Astros lineup. That being said, logic and statistics more often than not give way to that "gut" feeling a manager has in the playoffs about needing to put your best out there at every available opportunity. My guess is that regardless of what happens in Game 5, look for Clemens to start Game 6. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I do predict it. |

I think we should get game five under our belt before we start discussing who's starting game six!

Quote: I agree. Three things are for certain though. 1.) There WILL be a Game 6. 2.) The outcome of tonights game will play a HUGE part in dictating who starts game 6. 3.) We know who tonight's starter is. If he gives you a strong outing like we all hope he will, it will play an even larger part in who starts Game 6. ______________________________________________________

It should be Munro. We need to win the series not game 6. If Clemens goes and does not win then we have to go with Oswalt on 3 days rest and he did not look too good in his last start. Save Clemens for game 7 and if he struggles we can bring Oswalt in relief. I would bet the farm on Clemens in a game 7 to get to the WS but not bet on him if he goes tomorrow.
