Hernandez finished 7-1 with a 3.27 ERA in the VWL, and the Astros have received encouraging reports about his velocity. As things stand now, he'd compete with Wandy Rodriguez, Ezequiel Astacio, Fernando Nieve, Jason Hirsh and Taylor Buchholz for two rotation spots. But, with that many young pitcher looking for a spot, why not just stay with them? What exactly would we owe Contreras if the Willy T deal was made?

The Yankees gave some money to the Chisox to offset part of his cost when he was traded to them. If a prorated share of that sum were included, then the cost might come down to the $6 mil range (which would be "cheap" in this year's market). I saw an article which quoted the Chisox GM as saying that he like the idea of keeping 6 starting pitchers around, and that the White Sox would want a pitcher included in any trade for Contreras. So I'm not sure that the rumored deal with the Astros is very active.

If you made both trades you would trade both Taveras and Lane. Obviously, with Bagwell's shoulder being a question mark you cannot make both deals. I see the Astros sticking in the Tejada hunt and letting the Contreras thing slide.

Include everet and you meet their requirements 3 MLB players.

He would easily be the 5th starter at least, and if Clemens come back you would have a rotation of Oswalt/Pettitte/Clemens/Backe/Hernandez. Now tell me that wouldnt strike fear into the heart of any team in the NL. Hell a healthy Hernandez probably jumps ahead of Backe.

I was hoping he would gain some of his velocity back. I think he can be effective and would much rather see him win a spot over Zeke or Wandy. Zeke is good for a homer or two a game. I am not a big Zeke fan at all. Hirsh now I would love to see make it. Wandy I think is best served as a middle reliever or innings eater. I hope Carlos comes back with something to prove and fire in his eyes.

I don't think Andy had much velocity last year.

Ive read 90-91 though, and when he was at that speed in 04 he was effective (he was actually effective in the high 80s), but when it dropped into the low 80s he got hammered. His curve is supposed to be sharper too so thats awesome.

Carlos Hernandez definitely has the competitive make up you like to see in a starting pitcher; what he needs is for the physical ability to return. I wonder if Hernandez still has the problem "warming up" that seemed to plague him in the last year and a half? If I recall, Hernandez had problems with very low velocity early in the game, and had to go a couple of innings before his velocity improved. Hopefully that issue has gone away, but that report doesn't address it.

Those 2 statements put it in a nutshell for me regarding Hernandez. I saw Hernandez for a solid season and a half at RR when he was at the very top of his game, and even then command was a pretty serious issue with him. In the minors, his walk total was always a little high, but he still had high K numbers because of a low to mid 90's fastball and good curve which they couldn't figure out in the lower leagues, and he didn't have to worry too much about spotting the pitches. In the majors (where he really didn't pitch long enough for the league to figure him out) -- even if he does get consistent in the low 90s, which is questionable -- if he falls behind hitters and has consistent problems getting ahead in the count, he will end up getting hammered, as someone else put it. Command is his issue. Hernandez may or may not look better on the radar gun than Pettite, but at this level -- big deal. A 90-92 MPH strikes fear into no one in the major leagues, and without command it'll make a big league hitter salivate.

We need to make decisions for our 06 roster without him in mind. I think it's odd that some of you feel he can step in and be a 4th starter next year! If he's somehow able to contribute - a BIG if - and be effective, then that's just an extra bonus. I personally don't see him on the 06 Stros roster.

However, at 90-91 (which from reports is what he is at now) and a sharpened curveball with his changeup he at the very least can be a servicable 5th starter, and definitely better than the revolving door we had last year.
