Who else in the NL Central needs starting pitching? Hum? Do we take a flier on Morris? He'll come cheap and is a veteran. His only down side is that he was
a Cardinal for so long and beat the Astros many times.

i would take him if he signed cheap for a minor league deal.

No way I would ever want to see on him in an Astros uni. As far as minor league contract, I would even be hesitant there. Considering I don't beleive he
will ever be a solid big league pitcher, he would be just in the way in the minors.

He's 0-4 with a 9.67 ERA. We might as well just take Woody back if we want those numbers.

morris doesn't have velocity, movement or location. unless some miracle coach can restore that, the guy just needs to retire. |

I thought it was so dumb when they signed him in the first place (especially for the $$$ amount), and now they just cut him? Man, that is salt in an open wound
for Pirates fans.

My solace is that at least the Astros aren't the only club making stupid deals.

reasoning behind keeping somebody who isn't performing just coz he makes a lotta money. He couldn't be traded & sending him to the mound was a
guaranteed loss every 5th day. The trade & picking up his salary are in the past, an act of the prior GM, & they can't be changed. So by releasing
him & calling up a pitcher from the minors, it only costs the Pirates about $300,000 to improve their team. So why not do it?

The sad thing is that I think everybody saw this coming at the time the trade was made. It was either a desperate act by a desperate man (Dave Littlefield) or
the act of a man who knew he was gonna get fired anyway.

Dude hasn't pitched in the majors in nearly 3 years. Or the Giants with Barry Zito. Just under $15 million and he's yet to win a game this year. Kind of makes Woody or Villareal easier to swallow, doesn't it? Bill |

Was it Ted Williams that wanted to give part of his salary back one year because he felt like he didn't perform up to standards?

Great point, gigtime! Now, we all feel a little better.

The Giants are on the hook for Zito (just as the Dodgers are on the hook for Jason Schmidt) but the Braves aren't paying as much for Hampton as you might
think. Hampton was signed to that awful contract by the Rockies and sent him to Florida, who was trying to unload the contract of Charles Johnson. But the
Marlins couldn't afford Hampton either so the Rockies agreed to continue paying part of Hampton's contract just to make the deal go through. Well, the
Marlins flipped him to the Braves, agreeing also to pay part of Hampton's contract. So Mike Hampton is actually getting paychecks from three teams - the
Rockies, the Marlins and the Braves although he hasn't been worth any of it.

The Pirates won tonight. This woulda been Morris's turn in the rotation. First start of the year for young lefty Phil Dumatrait, & first time this
season the Bucs have gotten a win when the #5 starter started. Dumatrait didn't get the win, failing to go 5, but that's only coz of a long delay when
some of the lights went out in the Nats' new ball park.

It doesn't seem like that long ago when Matt Morris was one of the best starting pitchers in all of baseball. It's tough to watch any athlete decline
that rapidly, especially when it was an injury that was involved.
From 1997 to 2003, Matt Morris was one of the best starting pitchers in all of baseball. Then again, it has been a long time since he was really good ( Sub-4 ERA ). He's been on the decline ever since 2004.
