In the past we've been a veteran-heavy, pitching-emphasized, slow, and mostly right-handed hitting line-up team. Wade threw out the revered, and stagnant, Astrros mold and built a team with balance, and it makes it much more difficult for opponents to key in on our weaknesses and beat us with them. This version of the Astros has youth and veterans. It has a balance of left- and right-handed hitters with a couple of very good switchhitters for good measure. It has team speed and power. If Bourn and Towles get it going, we could have a slump-proof lineup. The defense it good enough. Actually a lot better than expected. Anyway, we've tried the "great defense/no offense" method and it is no match for "good offense/good defense." I hate to get too optimistic with so much of the season left to go, but I think we have ourselves a contender.

I am happy with what the Astros are doing right now. But, over the last couple of weeks, the Astros have been driven primarily by Berkman playing out of his mind and great clutch hitting by Tejada. That has obscured the effect of poor offense at a number of positions, including RF, CF, 3d base and catcher. Berkman will come to earth at some point, and Tejada may fall back a bit too. At that point, the offense from the sub-par producing positions HAS to improve or I foresee some offensive problems which the team's pitching isn't built to withstand. I'm not trying to be negative, because I'm as excited as anyone about the recent wins, but I'm also trying to be realistic.

And we have more options than last year. And yes, the lineup could be better, but you cannot take away from the fact that it includes more speed, and is harder to match up against for opposing teams pitching staffs.

And although I don't expect that to continue much longer I DO expect players like Pence, Bourn, and Towles to hit much better then they are now. So in a way, we will see improvement from some as Berkman comes back to earth, this should leave us with a pretty balanced offense overall. I still think pitching is the key. Our bullpen looks good, although I think Coop is working Wright too hard and in the wrong situations. Also, I can't see Chacon being this good the whole season, and Backe scares the piss outta me every time he starts. Hopefully when Wandy comes back and Roy regains form our staff should see a little more balance. But as of now, I definitely think we have a contender here.

Well, hopefully tonight was the beginning of Pence getting his stroke back. And Tejada has been great too ... as long as he does what he has been the past few weeks (get important hits mostly, starting rallies and or keeping them alive). We should be doing very well if our other players get back to what their career averages (or expectations thereof). If he's on base, Matsui is bound to get such better pitches since pitchers will have to concentrate on Bourne consistently any time he is on base. 17 out of 17 stolen bases, that's just awesome. If only he could get on base above the Mendoza line!!! :-(
