Backe kept them in the game...only 3 of the 4 runs were earned. The offense just hasn't produced yet and it's late.

If they come back in this one, I'll be shocked...especially if it's Villarreal or Bork coming in.

Giants 4, Astros 1 - Bottom of the 7th.
At least the Cubs and Cardinals both lost. Or the Cardinals "will lose." Did the Cardinals game end already? So the Astros will remain 1.5 games back of first place even if they lose. The Astros still have the top of the 8th and top of the 9th to work some magic. I'm feeling good regardless. At least the Astros are still close to first place.

Matt Cain flied out to shallow center field to leadoff the bottom of the 7th,
Tim Brydak is pitching for the Astros. At least he didn't give up a home run to Cain. Fred Lewis needs a home run to hit for a cycle. He won't get it... I hope not... Fred Lewis flied out to Bourn in center field. Tim Byrdak looks good... He's throwing strikes and getting outs.

Omar Vizquel flied out to Michael Bourn in center field.
Bourn is a putout machine in center field. Giants lead 4-1 after 7 innings. Berkman, Lee and Blum are due up in the top of the 8th.

Lance Berkman leads off the top of the 8th with a strikeout.

Carlos Lee hit a one-out homer to left field.
Giants lead 4-2 in the top of the 8th. Hmm, interesting but too bad Berkman didn't get on base prior to that...

Geoff Blum grounded out to first base.
Two outs now... Hunter Pence is up to bat. Down two runs with four outs to work with... I don't know what to think. I'm just not feeling it...

Hunter Pence walked.
J.R. Towles represents the potential tying run at the plate. Two outs though... Astros down 4-2 in the top of the 8th.

J.R. Towles is having a long at-bat, fouling off some tough pitches...
But he has a 2-2 count... J.R. Towles struck out swinging. He had to a pitch to drive too... Matt Cain had one more tough breaking ball in him, but the location was right over the middle of the plate... J.R. Towles simply swung and missed... Man oh man... One good swing could have tied the game there. Giants lead 4-2 in the middle of the 8th.

Hold on to your seat...
Cecil Cooper is taking out Tim Byrdak ( who's sharp and has retired 5 straight San Francisco hitters ), and he's bringing in Oscar Villarreal? Oh well... Astros trail 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th. The worst Villarreal can do is give up a 5th or 6th run... Only one out in the bottom of the 8th.

Bengie Molina popped up to shallow right field.
Sigh, the ball drops in for an "excuse me single." Even worse, Matsui and Pence collided and both players are down on the field. If I had to guess... Matsui may miss a game or two... Pence is shaking it off and looks fine. We're lucky that wasn't much worse, because that was scary! That could have really hurt our entire season if both Pence and Matsui got hurt for any amount of time. Both Hunter Pence and Kaz Matsui are staying in the game. Thank goodness... That had season ruined written all over it!

Now a line drive to Tejada for the second out.

Cecil Cooper is making another pitching change...
He's taking out Villarreal and bringing in Wesley Wright. Lefty versus lefty, as Wright will face Bowker. Two outs in the bottom of the 8th. The Astros are only trailing 4-2. Down two runs would give the Astros a fighting chance in the top of the 9th. Get this out, Wright!
|
|||
RyanED |

Giants are wisely pinch hitting for Bowker...
A right-handed hitter... Jose Castillo is the pinch hitter for the Giants. That's why I don't buy the lefty versus lefty crap... Of course, Wesley Wright is a solid reliever and he can get righties or lefties out.

Jose Castillo grounded out.
Good job, Wesley Wright. Giants lead 4-2 after 8 innings. Wright ( pinch hitter ), Bourn and Matsui are due up in the top of the 9th. It's drama time now! Let's get the rally caps going. Who cares if it's nearing midnight in Houston! I want to see Tejada, Berkman and Lee all bat in the top of the 9th... That means we need to have a good top of the 9th!

Let's get it done!
Come on Astros! Jose Ctuz Jr. will pinch hit for Wesley Wright to leadoff the top of the 9th. Brian Wilson will attempt to notch the save for the Giants. Oh no! Jose Cruz Jr. flied out to right center field on the first pitch. No plate discipline tonight for Cruz Jr. One out and Bourn is up to bat.

Michael Bourn worked a full count...
The Astros really need to get a runner on base, in order to bring the potential tying run to the plate. Michael Bourn struck out swinging... Two outs... The Astros are down to an out. We need Kaz Matsui to keep the game alive. Miguel Tejada is on deck and represents the potential tying run.

I'm just glad Hunter Pence and Kaz Matsui are alright.
That collision looked ten times worse than it actually was. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Mark Loretta starting at second base tomorrow night, because Kaz Matsui was limping after that final strikeout to end the game. He has to be in serious pain I bet.

Good effort by the Astros tonight.
I was pleased with the effort. Brandon Backe just needs to warmup ( Pre-Game warmup ) an extra half hour if need be, because it seems like he's totally flat early in ballgames. As the game progresses, he looks sharp. Astros lost 4-2, but it could have been a 2-1 win with the way the Giants are such a bad offensive team... I expect better from Backe... I really do. For example: Brandon Backe gave up three runs in the bottom of the 1st. Ballgame right there. Otherwise it's a 2-1 Astros win. Oh well... No harm done... Cardinals and Cubs both lost. 1.5 games back of first place... I'll take it... Astros have to win tomorrow night.

The Astros offense can't score 5 or 6 runs every night...
Some nights, we'll need Oswalt, Chacon and Backe to toss a gem. I mean, seriously... All three of those guys can get the job done.

About 15 minutes after last night's game ended in frustrating fashion ( another one of those could have, should have and would have won but we lost games
)... All of Yuku went down for what appeared to be a seven-hour maintenance. It sucks the Astros lost, but naturally Yuku had to add insult to misery for what
turned out to be a disappointing night.
I don't know if I'm more disappointed in the Astros or Yuku right now. Either way, I can't help but sing this song right about now... Chumbawamba - Tubthumping
