I think you can toss a coin on these 2. It may come down to their next starts as to who is #5 in the rotation. Someone has to go though when Wandy comes back.

I'd prefer for Brian Moehler to become the fifth starter once Wandy Rodriguez comes back, and I want to see Chris Sampson coming out of the bullpen in
relief. Chris Sampson is a great groundball pitcher who can be used to induce an important double play ball during a critical situation later on during the
ballgame. Even if Brian Moehler has a bad start, Cecil Cooper can simply bring Chris Sampson into the game.
I love Chris Sampson's bulldog mentality... He grinds, he battles and he's fun to watch sometimes. I'd rather see him coming out of the bullpen though. It's really a roll of the dice, but at this point I'll give the edge to Brian Moehler. Unless I'm mistaken, but I think Brian Moehler's next start is a huge ESPN game ( nationally televised game ) on Monday Night against the Cubs. Needless to say, if he pitches well during that game... He'll pretty much clinch the fifth spot in the starting rotation once Wandy Rodriguez returns. I would assume that anyway.

I think Sampson would have to screw up royally to lose his job to Moehler in the near future. I'm not really sold on either pitcher. But I think Cooper
really likes Sampson and will keep him in the rotation unless he has no choice but to take him out. It is easy to send Moehler back to the bullpen, because you
know he will still be there as an emergency option if needed. Both Moehler and Sampson are too hittable, in my opinion. I'm not convinced that Moehler is
as good as his recent starts, given that he was pitching in a pitcher's park in both instances. But, personally, I'm almost in the "flip a
coin" view of Moehler vs. Sampson, as someone said above.

Flip a coin, I don't care. If the Astros can continue to score 6+ runs a game with the bullpen being relatively solid, I say bring back Woody.

Bring back Woody?? lets not get carried away.
Yeah, the reason I posted the topic to start with was because I'm not sold on either in the rotation, & I look at it as the lesser of two evils. I think Sampson is a career long-relief guy. Next year I would think possibly Paulino takes his spot in the rotation at #5, & moves Chris to the pen. I love his bulldog mentality as well, just don't know if he's a consistent 5-6 inning starter. |

Sampson. Just make sure to field the best defensive infield on days he pitches. When he's keeping the ball on the ground he's an asset as long as the
defense can convert those balls into outs. Sampson does a good job of avoiding the negatives he can control. As bad as yesterday was he didn't allow a
walk or give up a home run.
