Billy Wagner being Billy Wagner |

Wagner has a fair criticism of teammates who leave after a tough loss so that he is the only one left to answer questions. (My recollection is that LoDuca had
the same criticism of Mets' teammates last year.) But, obviously it is bad to air the criticism publicly instead of privately. And I'm sure that the NY
press was mad about the other players and egged Wagner into making the statement. He also made a huge mistake by appearing to criticize only the hispanic
players, by pointing to their lockers. Although Wagner later denied any racial intent, even the suspicion of a racial division could tear up the team. One
wonders, "Where was Willie Randolph in all of this?" The manager should be making sure that the players don't try to duck out on the press.
Leaving Wagner there to deal with the situation is like leaving dynamite near a fire.

The media pointing out the Latin lockers...please. Billy was merely pointing at the lockers which were around him. That is an example of how lucky we have it
(now that John Lopez doesn't write for the Chronicle anymore) that our local writers leave racial angles where they belong - in the trashbin. All the New
York writers did there was to ensure they had an easy column or story for the next couple of days. Here's the future headlines:
"Mets Deny Racial Tensions in Clubhouse" "Delgado Seeks to Get Past Racial Questions" "The 'Queens' Zoo" "Mets Melting Pot Shows New Challenges for MLB" (That's the NYTimes headline) "Wagner: I Just Want to Pitch" They created a narrative and now they get an easy weekend or next week as the columns write themselves. |

ESPN likes drama like that.
The Mets are getting a lot of airtime. ESPN's Baseball Tonight put the red hot Houston Astros aside just to dedicate a 5-minute segment about the Mets' clubhouse concerns. I guess Billy Wagner's mouth is more interesting to ESPN. All I heard during the interview was a bunch of bleeping being done by ESPN. It's funny Billy Wagner says, "I just want to pitch." It's obvious he just wants to talk, cuss and criticize. That's fine though. It's just Wagner being Wagner.

Can't really say I disagree with him, but, as usual, he goes public with something that should stay in house.
