Of course, Bagwell's season was ended by a broken hand on August 10th while we hope Berkman will be able to carry his season through the entire six months. It might also be surprising to know that, at this point in the season, Bagwell had NO intentional walks recorded and had 5 stolen bases in 8 attempts. Berkman has received 7 intentional walks and stolen 7 bases in 8 attempts. "Astro Fan Since They Were First Called Astros."

I was confused by Hulsey's initial post that Berkman has played in 41 games. I know the Astros have played 25 games on the road, and if you do the math, that leaves 16 home games. What I didn't take into account is that Berkman sat out a game in Chicago (Sunday, April 6). Our starting rotation ( which is overachieving to begin with ) would likely have a much lower team ERA. A guy like Brian Moehler would look sensational pitching half his home games in ballparks like the Astrodome or Dodger Stadium. Remember, Jose Lima? The Astrodome made him a lot of money. Enough money that can last any man a lifetime. Needless to say, he totally sucked once he stepped on the mound at Enron Field ( Ah yes, I miss Enron! ). Did I lose some money as a dumb 19-year-old kid by investing some money into Enron? Of course, but that's not the point. Damn you, Enron! Some pitchers just look good in certain ballparks. Bourn and Matsui, even Pence would be dominating with their speed around the bases if they played half their home games in the Astrodome. Lance Berkman, Miguel Tejada, Carlos Lee and Hunter Pence would still be crushing the ball for a lot of home runs and extra bases hits -- playing in the Astrodome. While I loved it at the time, I agree now with Robby Thompson who said it was like playing in somebody's basement. I'll take MMP anyday. On the comparison, Berkman is certainly hotter at the plate. I don't mean this in a negative way but Baggy was better defensively. And despite the 7 steals, Baggy was one of the best baserunners I've ever seen. So instead of a negative comparison, how about I'll take both! :_y

Bagwell is going to get hotter as 1994 goes along. We don't know what will happen with Berkman this year but if he winds up with comparable numbers as Bagwell, I think we'd all take it. Slacker. In Bagwell's 42nd outing in 1994 he went 1-4. Biggio drew a two out walk from Andy Benes in the 5th, stole second and scored on a Bagwell triple to right-center giving the Astros a 4-1 lead in a game they won 4-2 to improve their record to 23-19. Ken Caminiti hit a two run HR (his 7th) in the 2nd. Shane Reynolds gave up both Padre runs pitching 5 innings for the win improving his record to 2-1 on the season. '94 Bagwell now has 21 extra base hits to Berkman's 32, and he closed the RBI gap to 1. Through 42 games... Berkman - .394/.473/.800 Bagwell - .331/.406/.629

Astros go down 6-2 though. Berkman's crew at 24-20. Berkman moved into a tie with Jimmy Wynn for 5th in runs scored (829) on the all time Astros' list tonight. Jose Cruz is next at 871. 1994 game 43... Bagwell started this game on the bench. Caminiti hit a home run in the 2nd. The Padres put up a 4 spot on Pete Harnisch in the 5th inning after two walks and three doubles to erase the Astros' 3-1 lead. Derek Bell hit a double and stole a base for the Padres (maybe that's why they decided they wanted him). Dave Veres and Mike Hampton held the Padres in check through the 7th inning. Chris Donnels lead off the 7th with a walk and Biggio reached on an error. Finley sacrificed the runners over and Bass got a sac fly to make it 4-5. Collins called on Bagwell to PH and the Padres' gave him a free base intentionally. Luis Gonzalez hit a double to give the Astros a 6-5 lead. Mitch Williams coughed up a 2 run home run in the 8th though and the Astros lost 7-6 to drop to 23-20 on the season. His average was as high as .404 during the game. Astros' avoid the sweep in Arlington 5-4 to improve their record to 25-20 on the season and end the road trip 7-3. They stay 2 1/2 behind the Cubs before welcoming them to Houston tomorrow. 1994 game 44... Astros start a six game road trip through Atlanta and Philadelphia. The Braves were 27-14 and in first place going into the series and they had Tom Glavine on the mound. Doug Drabek was on fire for the good guys though dealing 9 innings in a 3-hit shutout to improve his record to 7-1 (2.29 ERA). The Astros banged 16 hits and put a five spot on Glavine. Bagwell went 1-5 and scored a run. James Mouton was 4-5 and had one three doubles for the good guys. Scott Servais hit a home run and the Astros won 8-0 improving to 24-20 on the season and they pull to within two of the division leading Reds. through 44 games... 1994 Bagwell - .327/.403/.615 2008 Berkman - .399/.476/.804

Astros lose 7-2 and drop to 25-21 on the season. But if you thought THAT was a sad game to watch... 1994 game 45 - Astros face John Smoltz and the NL East leading Atlanta Braves. Darrel Kile gave up 4 runs in 5 innings for the Astros. In the top of the 8th the Astros got the bases loaded after two singles by Gonzalez and Caminiti and a two out walk to Sid Bream. Andujar Cedeno got a single scoring a run and they scored another on a wild pitch. With Finley on second and two outs in the 11th the Braves walked Bagwell intentionally. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, but Caminiti hit a line drive to first base to end the threat. Dave Veres pitched the 10th, 11th, and 12th innings giving up only one hit and striking out 4 batters, but he was pulled after Rafael Belliard hit a one out single in the 13th. John Hudek came in to face Deion Sanders and got a groundball to shortstop, but Cedeno mishandled it and both runners were safe. Jeff Blauser ended the contest then with a double to left field and Veres took the loss. Bagwell was 2-5 in the game with a walk and a run scored. Prime Time stole two bases for the Braves and the Crime Dog hit a two run home run in the 1st off of Kile. The Astros had 13 hits, drew 7 walks and a hit batsman and the Braves committed 2 errors, but all of the hits were singles and 5 runs wasn't good enough. 1994 Bagwell - .329/.406/.609 2008 Berkman - .389/.467/.784

Astros win 4-2 and improve to 26-21 on the season. 1994 game 46 - Astros faced Steve Avery (5-1, 2.49). The Braves got three singles against Greg Swindell from Fred McGriff, Javy Lopez and David Justice to lead off the 2nd inning. With two outs and a run in Avery got another single to give the Braves a 3-0 lead. Bagwell grounded out to end the 3rd after a two out walk and a steal by Biggio. The Astros got the runs back in the 4th though with doubles from both Caminiti and Cedeno and took the lead in the 5th when Bagwell walked and scored on a double by Caminiti. Justice knotted it back up with a solo shot off Swindell in the 7th. The Astros put a four spot up in the 8th on Mike Stanton with hits form Caminiti, Kevin Bass, Tony Eusebio, Andujar Cedeno, Steve Finley and Biggio. The Braves got one back in the bottom half, but the Astros won 8-5 improving their record to 25-21. Swindell (5-1, 2.99) got the win. Caminiti had 3 doubles, scored 2 runs with an RBI. Despite that the Braves walked Bagwell intentionally to load the bases for him later in the 8th, but he struck out that time. Bagwell was 0-2 on the day but walked three times and scored a run. He was also hit by a pitch, stole a base and scored a run. The Astros won 5-3 and improve to 27-21, 1.5 games back. 1994 game 47 - Astros opened a three game set in Philadelphia against the defending NL champs. Finley and Servais both hit home runs in the top of the 7th to give the Astros a 4-2 lead and that was the final score. Shane Reynolds pitched 7 innings giving up 2 runs (1 earned) for his third win (3-1, 3.56). Bagwell was 1 for 4 with a sac fly and an RBI. It's nice to know that Lance Berkman is still on pace to win the 2008 National League MVP Award, especially if the Houston Astros make the playoffs -- division title or wild card championship.

Berkman was 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI. If you like round numbers that was double #300 and RBI #900 for his career. Bagwell was 2-5. He doubled to leadoff the 7th in a tie game. Moved to third on a groundout by Donnels and scored on a sac fly by Gonzalez to give the Astros a 6-5 lead. After a two out single and a steal from Biggio Bagwell singled in the 8th to give the Astros a 2 run cushion. Good guys win 7-5. 27-21 on the season. Gane 49 vs. the Phillies still... Berkman was 1-3 with a triple, a walk and a run scored. Astros win 4-3. 28-22 on the season. David West and Heathcliff Slocumb combined for 8 innings of no-hit baseball. Slocumb stayed to start his 3rd inning in the 9th with the Phillies up 4-0. Finley lead off the inning with a line drive single breaking up the no-hitter. Finley stole second but they scored it fielder's indifference (stupid rule) and moved to third on a flyball to right from Biggio. With one out Bagwell singled to make it 4-1. Phillies brought in Doug Jones and Bagwell stole second too (same scoring) and later scored on a two out single by Cedeno. That was where the comeback stopped though. 4-2 Phillies. Astros win the series 2-1 and go 4-2 on the road trip, 27-22 for the year. Bagwell had walked and stole second in the 2nd inning. 1-3 on the day with an RBI, a run scored a walk and a steal. And some people say Bagwell wasn't clutch... That was two clutch games right there for sure. 1994 Bagwell - .326/.408/.589 2008 Berkman - .387/.467/.773

I'm glad someone's enjoying it. This thread was a great idea to start with btw. Kind of strange in the course of thos two days the Astros closer from the previous season has come in to get a save for the Phillies in both seasons. Bagwell's about to make the individual contest interesting too. It should be a while before their season numbers are very comparable (assuming Berkman cools down anyway), but Bagwell just started a streak that will carry him into June on that road trip (it's May 30 already for the 94 squad in this thread). The two teams really are playing very similar so far (the 94 Astros are heading back home in a tie for first after that 6 game road trip btw). Both teams had first year managers and GM's and traded for closers prior to the season. Both teams were hoping to capitalize on a weak NL Central (1994 was the first season with 6 MLB divisions). The makeup of these two teams is so different though. The 94 squad was squad was young, coming off their first winning season since 1989 and trying to crack into the postseason for the first time. The 2008 team is loaded with veterans trying to hang onto that window. It's sad to think, as young as that team was in 1994 three of them have already passed away... He drew three walks and scored a run. He was thrown out at the plate once. Astros won 4-3 thanks to some stellar defense by Erstad and Bourn in the 9th. 29-22 for the season. 1994 game 50 - Astros began a 5 game home stand on May 30th against the Marlins. Biggio drew a two out walk in the bottom of the first and then made it to third on a throwing error trying to pick him off. Bagwell singled to put the Astros up 1-0. The Marlins got the run back in the top of the 2nd, but in the bottom half Servais hit a solo shot with two outs. Kile struggled in the 3rd giving up a leadoff walk a doulbe and a single to start the inning before getting the first out. He then proceeded to walk the next batter, got a pop out and hit a batter to load the bases, but it was for the pitcher and he escaped with a K and the team down 3-2. The Astros were retired in order in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, but the Marlins were unable to add to their lead as Kile held the line despite giving up 4 walks and a triple in the middle innings. Mouton, Finley and Biggio all singled to leadoff the 6th tying the game up. The Marlins walked Bagwell and got Gonzalez to ground into a doubleplay and Cedeno to pop out. With the game still tied at 3-3 in the 8th Biggio hit a one out single, but he was thrown out trying to get into second. Meanwhile, Tom Edens got six straight outs after relieving Kile in the 8th to keep it tied. Chris Donnels lead off the bottom of the 9th with a single and moved to second on a bunt by Servais. Sid Bream came in to PH for Edens and the Marlins walked him on purpose to turn the lineup over and set up the double play. Mouton struck out, but Finley drew a walk to load the bases and Biggio hit a line drive to end it. 4-3 Astros. 28-22 on the year. The article quotes anonymous sources who say that the Pasadena gym owner connected to the Pettitte HGH controversy also bragged about supplying steroids to Clemens, Bagwell and Pettitte. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2008/05/24/2008-05-24_sources_kelly_blair_made_boasts_about_ju.html The New York Daily News' "standards" have been deplorable during the Clemens' investigation, printing raw rumors off the street, and this article is just as questionable.

The Astros had traded for him in the offseason to be the closer. He had recorded 43 saves for the NL champs in '93, but for the Astros he pitched 20 innings, gave up 21 hits, 4 home runs and a whopping 24 walks helping him get his ERA up to 7.65.
