Why even try to win games? Something needs to be done, especially if Oswalt is going to having an off year!We are winning games. I think your comment is a bit dramatic, if you are basing it off watching the game tonight. Do I think we need help with the staff absolutely, but it hasn't stopped us from having one of the best records in the NL. They need to upgrade, but I still believe they can win games. |

It's a known fact that the playoffs, the offense does not show up. Its pitching that wins.

Breathe deep and look at the standings. Look at other team's pitching staffs. Look at where other teams are in the standings.

Well, I'm glad SOMEONE is confident with this pitching staff!

Oswalt has to come around in order for the Astros to make the playoffs. I think he will. Am I sure? No, not as certain as I might have been two weeks ago.
But I suspect he will come around eventually.

OK, Oswalt hasn't been as dominant as expected.
Um, haven't a couple of pitchers been more dominant than expected? Seriously, how could anybody - not even Astros fans - write the Astros out of play-off contention right now??! |

Oh, and by the way. Prove that tidbit with facts throughout the history of the game. Back it up, baby!! |

We made it to the WS with a good pitching staff and mediocre offense that was as effective as Lindsay Lohan in a spelling bee. That plan didn't work.
If this team can keep winning games, we can hopefully pick up an arm or two by the deadline. We aren't going to have a staff like Arizona's, but we should be competive this year. I think the Cubs are a paper dragon.

I guess you would feel better if the Astros had a better pitching staff, and a record of 15 - 30 (circa 2005).

what about the chances of the Astros acquiring someone like a Greg Maddux, or if they get really crazy Joe Blanton

All the starting pitchers are either mediocre, or in Roy's case pitching like it. The most damning fact is we are all eagerly awaiting the return of Wandy
Rodriguez - now that's sad.

Wandy Rodriguez has grown up a lot as he's gotten older.
I remember in the past I had some doubts about him, but he's been coming on strong the past two seasons ( home games most notably last year and any game this year ). At 29 years old, he's finally blossoming into a very good starting pitcher. It's only a sample size so far this year ( 23.1 innings ), but he did produce a 2.31 ERA and a solid 1.11 WHIP during his 4 regular-season starts prior to his injury this season. You can make a case that Wandy Rodriguez is going to be our best starting pitcher this season. Wandy Rodriguez's batting average against was a sensational .228 as well. And mind you, nobody else in the Astros' current starting rotation ( not even the great Roy Oswalt ) is pitching anywhere close to that. You can probably praise Wandy Rodriguez a little too much these days, but he does deserve it. He's been pitching extremely well this year, and he pitched extremely well all of last year during his starts at Minute Maid Park. For instance, wouldn't you have been happy to see Wandy Rodriguez pitch in two of these ballgames ( against the Cubs or Phillies ) on this current 7-game home stand? He'd probably have given us a 2-0 record or a tough luck no-decision that the bullpen won.

I especially don't understand it with our record. As for something needing to be done, what do you suggest? If we need pitching, how do you propose to get it? And really, this isn't a flame, but if you don't want the team to win games, why are you watching?

Honestly, I think film had one of those knee jerk reactions we all have as fans. It's along season baseball can be frustrating. That being said, we
don't win our last three games without our starters, that's Sampson, Chacon and Backe. None of those games are won without the efforts of those
starting pitchers. All 3 basically shut down or kept down, very good lineups.

Hey, I'm just criticising the pitching staff as a fan. After all, you aim for the moon, because if you miss, at least you'll hit the stars, right? This
staff definitely needs to get their ERA down lower AND stay in the game longer if they plan to make it all the way. I think this is the problem the whole front
office knows about. I'm hoping we pick up a great pitcher after the All-star break. Do we have the budget?
