Matsui - Worth the Cash? |

Well?
Is Kash Matsui worth the contract? (Result) |

Better than Biggio was the last couple of years. What was the pay comparison? My only problem with position players is Bourn batting leadoff.

I answered "slightly overpaid," but the poll choices really don't reflect my concern. I think he is doing a good job for what he is paid this
year. The Astros are lucky they didn't sign Luis Castillo, who apparently is in severe decline with the Mets (who beat out the Astros in the bidding for
him). However, Matsui is surely overpaid, when the length of his contract is taken into account. At his age, with a 3 year contract, the odds are good that he
will be a part time utility player at some point during the contract.

Matsui lifetime OBP of .326 isn't very good for a 2 place hitter. Couple that with Bourn at .306 OBP(career, even lower in 2008...289
I voted "slightly overpaid." |

I'm gonna go with "slightly overpaid" too . Hes not setting the world on fire, but hes not crappy either . Hes pretty much just an average
player . His defense has been OK, but I really expected more from him at the plate .

I went with "slightly overpaid". He's actually been disappointing in the field although his range is obviously better than Biggio's.
Offensively, we knew he wasn't going to be as good as his Colorado numbers but he's been better than the guy the Mets dumped which was what we'd
been warned he would be.
Given that we were in the battle with the Cubs to sign him, I think we came out better. What would we have if we didn't sign him?

It's too early to tell. But, let's look at the alternatives:
Burke .168/.283/.198 (3/0 SB) Iguchi .259/.324/.343 (8/1 SB) Castillo .266/.365/.344 (12/2 SB) Matsui .266/.332/.333 (15/3 SB) I think the telling factor in the end will be the health issues. I like what he brings to the team. LAnce and Kaz are just about the ONLY players on our team that have quality AB's just about every time and I still believe his defense is an asset despite the early mis-cues. |

nose dive. I agree with you that Matsui's defense will be OK when we look back at the end of the year. He has gone through a flurry of errors early on,
which make his defensive stats bad right now. Hopefully, that streak is an aberration. Watching him, it is obvious that he has great range and can make
acrobatic plays. Many of the errors occurred because of that ability...i.e., trying to make the "impossible" play and throwing the ball away.

I voted for slightly overpaid.
He's not worth his salary ( who is these days? ), but clearly he's an important piece to this team. Without Kaz Matsui, I'd estimate the Astros would easily have 5 more losses right about now. 8.5 games back of the wild card in late June is still reasonable. Without Kaz Matsui, we'd probably be 13.5 games back.

Also factor in the fact that Michael Bourn hasn't been doing a heck of a lot as the leadoff hitter, and you can easily understand why Kaz Matsui has been
so important to this year's team. Just from the standpoint of being a decent on-base percentage player as the number two hitter in the lineup. Not to
mention, he does have a good defensive glove at second base. A noticeable upgrade over an aging Craig Biggio if nothing else. He's also a good runner on
the bases. His speed is a great asset to the team.
Michael Bourn's on-base percentage was starting to rise ever so slightly, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts to go back down into really horrible range again. At least Michael Bourn avoided a 4-strikeout game today. He was able to produce a weak pop-up in his final at-bat. Sigh, an infield pop-up is cause for celebration from Bourn.

I'm glad he's on the team, overpaid or not. |

Matsui is also a better defender than those 3 players. I'd say he's been a better deal then the other 2 FA 2B (along with Burke). I'd like to get
some more OBP at the top of the lineup, but that doesn't appear doable unless we're willing to get rid of Bourn.

He is slightly overpaid, but we have to remember two things: 1) He signed a three year deal, so the jury is still out on this one. 2) Remember that others like
Iguchi have home ballpark issues. If Iguchi played in Houston it would likely be a different story.
