When a team has better "bench players" than starters, like Erstad & Loretta, why are they bench players?

Because Cooper is afraid of getting "chaconed" by the starters.

I think the old baseball addage is guys like Loretta and Erstad are labeled bench players when they get to a certain age. When in reality they are better all
around players than the guys starting in front of them. Houston seems to be forcing themselves to play guys like Bourn, instead of players like Erstad who are
clearly better at this point.
As for the game tonight, Good win. Sampson pitched like a guy with no pressure. I think he felt like I only need to go 5 so make them a good 5 and he did. Set the tone. Loretta pretty much carried the offense. Atlanta looks bad, don't see a lot of spunk from that team, similiar to a team I root for. Houston and Atlanta look awfully similiar to me. |

Loretta may be in his final year as a ballplayer and Erstad is basically a one-year rental. Matsui and Bourn are (like it or not) our future for a couple of
years so that's why they are getting the playing time. As much as I like all of them, I hope the Astros can deal Loretta, Erstad and Brocail if the team
has a poor month. All three would, I'm sure, like to get into a pennant race again before they retire and have played well enough that a contender might
want them. We could get a AA player or somebody with some upside who just might blossom. That's one way to jump-start your farm system. It means giving up
on 2008 but it is better for the team long-term. We might even trade Ausmus if we could pry Oswalt away from him. This is his last year too.
We don't get any draft picks if these guys retire so it makes more sense to move them at the trade deadline than to have them play out their last days on the bench of a team going nowhere.

I wouldn't trade them just to get something in return. I think it is going to be difficult to get much more than B type prospects, if anything, in return for one of them, and if that is the case, I would skip it. The Astros have plenty of those type "prospects." It will be difficult to replace any of these 3 guys for the remainder of the year, and it won't be worth it just to pick up guys who are the bottom of other teams' prospect list. It is hard to say right now whether any of the three might be Class B free agents, and thus worth keeping for that reason. My guess is that Loretta and Brocail stand a pretty good chance on that score. Brocail might even reach Class A free agent status. I don't know why you think Loretta or Brocail will retire after this season. Loretta probably can continue playing for several more years if he is willing to be a utility player, like Vizcaino. The Astros' contract with Brocail has a 2009 option, which makes me think that retirement wasn't contemplated. |
