Why Pitch Oswalt? |
Lead | |
|
Perhaps I am just blind here...but I was wondering why on earth we'd choose to pitch him for one start before the All-Star game? Why not just let him
rest up?

Fair question. I wondered the same thing. Maybe they figured they would take advantage of the pain killer shot while it lasted? It seemed like a real easy
thing to give him a complete break through the ASG, though.

In my opinion, as soon as Cooper took over the reigns of this club, all logic went out the window.
This is another prime example of a shoddy managerial move. Oswalt should have been shutdown until after the All-Star Break. Now he may be out even longer. It's as though Cooper is just along for the ride and cashing the big paychecks as long as he can until he's shown the front door. Though I am currently a Coop hater..I really doubt it fell to him as the final decision maker on this one. Roy probably wanted to see how it would go and
immediately found out. Let's hope he isn't gone the rest of the year. The good thing is at least it's not his arm or shoulder.

They said management left it completely up to him. While I understand giving your veteran ace some say in the matter, I can't agree with giving him complete and total decision making authority, especially when you consider that: (1) the Astros are so far back in the standings; (2) it's 3 games before the All Star break; and (3) the Astros will need pitchers other than Roy O to step it up if they have any hope of making the playoffs, but they won't make it without him either, so rest him through the All Star break and let another pitcher try to raise the bar, especially against the Nats. If the radio announcers have it correctly, and Oswalt misses any more starts because of the setback, I see this as another wart on the face of Astros management. There was very little to be gained by starting Oswalt last night, and way too much to lose, IMO.

I also doubt it was Coop's decision, and as support, I was listening to the radio broadcast during the top of the 2nd inning and when Paronto was in the on-deck circle, Milo and either Raymond or Dolan (can't distinguish the two) said the decision for Roy to pitch fell 100% on Roy. And *that* is the reason Cooper is not managerial material. The decision should never have been put to Oswalt in the first place. Oswalt is such a competitor, if he were asked if he could pitch, he'd say yes and crawl to the mound. A good manager would have told Oswalt - "your not pitching again until after the All-Star Break, I don't care how good you think you feel right now...case closed". I think Roy/Coop/management took a calculated risk that Roy could get in a start before the Break and were proven wrong. If anything, I'd be blaming
whatever doctor gave Roy the OK to pitch. If he clearly wasn't ready, where was the doctor to say 'no'? In football, you have to be cleared by the
doctor. Shouldn't the fact that his start kept getting pushed back tell you something was wrong and not to push it?

The issue with Oswalt was one of how he took to the injection he was given to deal with the pain. Most sports medicine dr's will all say the same thing,
if the diagnosis is something where you can't tear or pull a ligament in an elbow, groin or tear your labrum in a shoulder than the injury won't get
worse, it' s a matter of how much pain you can play with and only the player knows that. My point is this, this type of injury more than likely in a
dr's view is one that can't be made worse by playing, but it's up to Oswalt to see how much pain he can deal with. I'm sure Roy was told that
and figured I'll get the shot, wait a few days then be fine with some rest. He threw the bullpen session declared he was ok and pitched. It was up to the
Astros management then to make a decision do we be super cautious and let him hold out til after the allstar break or let him throw a game before it.
My money would of been on holding him out til after the Allstar break to give that injury a better chance to heal. He's your ace, you gain nothing by throwing him one game before the break and you have invested long term in this guy. It seems to me ALL the Astros front office ever does is think short term short term short term. When is someone going to think about the future of this franchise? |

The flipside of their thinking was that if they had a setback, he'd still have five full days to bounce back and more if it was needed.
