The proof is in the ice cores. Scientists can go back in time hundred of thousands of years and have identified a complicated mix of interacting variables that appear to influence long-term climate trends. Three such factors that are thought to control climate are solar radiation, the presence of atmospheric dust, and the chemical composition of the atmosphere. The evidence in the ice cores reveal that CO2 levels have never been this high in all the recorded data according to ice core research that goes back 420,000 years. Beyond that, I guess we don't know.
