Would you pay Lee what he wants? More than $12 million a year? And give him a four-year deal?

Considering we might be without Clemens, Pettitte, and Bagwell next year ( roughly 50 million dollars in salary this season ), why not try to get some other good players when we have the chance ? Money shouldn't be the issue right now, and Carlos Lee, Alfonso Soriano, and Miguel Tejada are all fine players. The Houston Astros would be very fortunate if they can acquire one of those guys, or perhaps someone else that is an all star caliber player.

You can make the case that we can simply wait for free agency this winter, and we don't have to make a trade right now. But at the same time, I don't want to see the 2006 season go to waste. We are 6 games back of the wild card and can still make the postseason this year. There is no reason to give up just because we dug ourselves a hole with 2 months left in the season. I really feel if we can add another impact-hitter before Monday's trading deadline, we will be the team to beat the rest of the season.

But in the mean time, it is critical we win 2 out of 3 or sweep all 3 games against the Diamondbacks this weekend. We need to do it considering we lost 2 out of 3 vs the Reds.

And it is time to scoreboard-watch and we need the Reds to lose some games now. Every team ahead of us in the wild card race need to lose, but regardless, the Astros have to start putting some winning streaks together, otherwise it won't even matter.
