Hmmmm, you raise an interesting question. If I were the GM and had total job security I would probably rebuild as well. Knowing facts as I do (that this is as much an entertainment industry as anything else) I would think differently. You can't market a rebuilding team easily and the free agent crop is especially thin.

In my mind I have given up on 2006, but I still make the trade because Tejada would be the find of the 2007 free agent crop. His three year 36 million dollar deal (left on his contract) would be downright affordable in comparison with what guys like Zito, Soriano, and Lee will get. As a businessman I would recognize the problem my overspending has caused. I raise my payroll to 105 million, but then cut it to 60 or 70 next year? That won't fly with the fans. If I add a Tejada and one other middle of the road free agent (Huff?) I probably float around the 90 million mark and make it look like I'm trying to compete again next year.

Also, as we've seen with Buchholz and Wandy, nothing makes the lumps smaller like run support. Without a trade or other signing we are bringing the same crappy offense back next year.
I'm down with OBP (yeah you know me).
