An article on Backe after he started his rehab had Garner quoted as saying, "I've never seen a guy complete it," Garner said, referring to the comeback from Tommy John surgery on an accelerated schedule. Every case, something has happened, that I've seen. So I just think we need to be cautious, and I think he's doing the right thing."

So hopefully nothing to be too concerened about.

The next bit from Garner was a little disturbing though.

Quote:
Garner recalled the case of Cal Eldred, who earned Rookie of the Year votes in 1992 when Garner managed the Milwaukee Brewers. Reconstructive elbow surgery cost the right-hander all of the 1995 season and half of 1996, and effectively derailed his chances of becoming an elite pitcher.

"When they drilled the holes [in his elbow during the surgery, they didn't have enough room between the holes, and evidently his muscles and tendons were so strong that they cracked that area in between, so that's what set him back," Garner said. "That's sort of a freaky thing."
