Gwynn was pudgy throughout his career, and was rotund toward the end of his career. Frank Howard is another very heavy, big hitter.

FWIW, there have been some studies which indicate that fat hitters don't age well in the game, but that fat pitchers aren't hurt by their body type. In fact, those studies indicate that big burly pitchers have longer careers. I'm not sure I buy those studies either.

I think Berkman is a pretty good athlete, and I also think he seems to be in good condition. Garner said that the Astros' physicians said that Lee has the body type to carry his weight and that most of it is muscle.:huh
