While I agree in principle, I think you are being way overdramatic. This isn't Bernie Mac coming back for the 3000th hit. Biggio is still a fairly productive player, but there are a couple of peculiar issues:

1) He isn't a top of the order hitter anymore.
2) He isn't the best player on the team at his position.

That being said, that doesn't mean that NO ONE would offer him a starting job. He is probably better than maybe half of the second basemen out there. So, Biggio would naturally get his 3000th hit somewhere in 2007.

So, the question is this: should the organization try to win games without any regard for the service of the (arguably) best player in franchise history?

This is not an easy decision. As pure a baseball guy as I am and as by the numbers as I am known for being, no one can deny the long-term effects of this decision. When you look at the great baseball cities you see World championship banners sure, but you also see living and dead legends that fans compare the stars to. You see tradition that roots those players and fans.

Do players really go to Chicago because they think they can win? Sure, Ted Lilly can say he thinks the Cubs give him a better chance of winning a ring, but who is he kidding? What he can say is that Chicago is a great baseball town and the history certainly plays a role in that. As the Cards blow through here again you see greats like Scott Rolen and Pujols leave town. They aren't the greatest at their positions in that town (at least not yet.) They will be compared to others that played in St. Louis. Biggio and Bagwell are trend-setters and the fact that Drayton allowed them to finish in Houston means something. It means that fans have a stronger connection with the franchise and the club is beginning to have a tradition that fans and players can connect to.

While I agree that Biggio at second (and leadoff) is not what is best for the Astros in 2007, it is what is best for the Astros in the long-term. Who knows, maybe we will still win this year and maybe that tradition will help us land someone next year.
I'm down with OBP (yeah you know me).
