Let's understand that we're not talking about Carr being a Marino or Elway. Elway didn't win the Super Bowl until he got a better team around him (although I'd argue those were pretty good teams prior), but he was still able to win football games. He's a great QB. Carr is not a great QB. And for what it's worth, there's maybe a handful of great QB's in this league. Peyton, Brady, McNabb, that's about it in the "great" category.

I think Carr's a good QB that could be a very good QB in a better situation. For example, plug him into San Diego and I think he plays, at the very least, as well as Rivers, and the Chargers would still be where they're at. Plug him in at Detroit, and he struggles like he does here and they continue to be bottom feeders. Even the very good QB's in this league are few and far between and most of them it could be argued that they've reached very good status because of the situations they're in. I mean, not sure I'd say Rothlesberger is very good, but it was nice that he was drafted to that situation where he at least looked very good. Carr wasn't that fortunate.

Carr has pretty much been in a situation his entire career where he's had to force the action. When you can't get a run game going, when you can't throw downfield because of poor protection, then you start trying to force things. Probably why you throw to AJ in quadruple coverage. OTOH, when you have an offense that can get some things done, like Sunday when you can run the ball, then you don't have to force things and you can find Taylor on the rollout for 24 yards, and you can find AJ for 17 on the game winning drive.

Now, say you go the route of getting a legit veteran who makes plays in here. Who exactly would that be? Jeff Garcia? Never mind his age, this is a guy who did well in Frisco behind Pro-Bowlers Ron Stone, Ray Brown, and Jeremy Newberry, then stunk it up in Cleveland and Detroit where they have nothing, and is doing well again in Philly behind that Pro-Bowl line. Now we want to bring him to Houston where they have a far far less than Pro-Bowl line? I just don't see how a move like that makes a difference other than giving fans another name to bitch about.

The legit veteran is already here. I know people are tired of the excuses. I am too. The fact remains unfortunately, those excuses are still legit. It's a TEAM game. I know people will go to the cliche card now, but it doesn't change that fact. Until the TEAM is better, o-line, RB, WR, d-line, CB, safeties, punter, kick returner, and probably most importantly seeing how the Texans lead the league in Injured Reserve, depth.

Until you get a lot of those problems taken care of, I don't think Elway in his prime would make a whole lot of difference on this team.
