Sampson's best weapons are good control and groundballs. The main advantage of groundball pitchers is that they tend to give up fewer HRs, but may give up more hits. Sampson's groundball rate has not been super-great in recent periods, which raised some question marks in my mind. The number of pitchers who post as few Ks as Sampson and become very good pitchers in the majors is very small...so small, that it would be a big exception, statistically, if he can be as good as he was yesterday on a consistent basis. However, a 4-ish ERA is certainly doable for him, and that would be good enough. I think the upside for Sampson is a Jeff Suippan-type pitcher, and I hope he achieves that....we would be happy if he did.
