Trading Pence (while a bad idea for the Astros) would also not be something the Padres would do. Not saying he wouldn't be welcomed into that anemic offense but he is set to make some bucks soon. If they would trade someone like Peavy who is the cornerstone of that team they are going to want can't miss prospects and rookies... not necessarily guys who have 2 or 3 years of service.

That said I don't think we have nearly enough chips to get a guy like Peavy unless their GM is willing to cut a seriously awesome deal. That said I would prefer to see us pony up some serious moolah and win a bidding war for Sabathia. I don't want Sheets since his injury history is terrifying. Simply terrifying. Sabathia on the other hand is a ridiculously good, young and healthy starter who we can get for nothing other than money and we don't have to give up catchers or pitchers or other prospects for our future. I am not saying any of this is likely... simply that I would love to see McLane (who has gone out and spent money on Lee and Berkman and Oswalt) put those 130 million dollar contracts towards a top shelf starter and while unlikely is possible. McLane isn't stupid. He knows that while he makes money with a good team he makes ridiculous money with a play-off team. He also knows that with a Sabathia we would be a play-off team this year and with a healthy Lee and Sabathia we gotta helluva shot next year. Hopefully Wade (who has gotten him to pull the trigger this past year) can make sure he knows what he needs to do to build a champion.
