His response: hillies have always had a top-heavy system, with one or two stud prospects and very little depth at the upper levels, which is - at least in my opinion - one of the biggest reasons why teams win. Under Wade (because of those bad free agent signings you mentioned) Philadelphia took Utley in the first round in 2000 and had no pick in the second round. In 2001 they had no pick in the second or third. In 2002 they took Hamels in the first round and no one else who has made an impact anywhere in the majors. In 2003 they had no first or second rounder, walking away with Michael Bourn (the best player from that class and the man who had the worst on-base and OPS in baseball this season) in the fourth round. In 2004 they did alright with Golson, Happ and Marson, though none of those players is a regular yet - four years after the draft. In 2005 they had no first round pick in the strongest draft this decade and walked away with Mike Costanzo in the second round and Matt Maloney in the third. I fail to see how Wade built a system. Those guys can fall off their couches if they'd like, but I'm going to go ahead and stand by my statements."
