When I lived in the NY-NJ area in the '60s, and attending Rutgers U., my Dad worked for Shell Oil at "30 Rock", the RCA building in Rockefeller Center, which was Shell Oil Co.'s home office (before Shell moved that HQ to Houston in 1969). The Tonight Show was taped in the late PM at the NBC Studios there.

Ed McMahon and Johnny Carson would drift into Hurley's bar a couple of blocks away from "30 Rock" (usually with some babes) after the taping of the Tonight Show. I often met my Dad on Friday afternoons, coming home from Rutgers for the weekend, and we would adjourn to Hurley's for drinks before heading back home to Northern NJ. When Ed & Johnny came into Hurley's, Carson headed for a secluded table with his entourage, but Ed McMahon would chat with the patrons, even us. He was terrific and was really down-to-earth.

And I agree with Speedy's assessment of "Jacko"...he was a sick freak, creepy, and no doubt a pedophile. The obsessing over cultural dirt-bags never ceases to amaze me.
