As long as he can operate a financially-successful business, there is admiration from the people whose opinions actually matter to him--other owners and other business people.

Sturt, I think you are half-right here, but if it's any consolation I think it's the more important half.  I doubt Crane cares what even his peers think of him, I think he is only concerned about the financial success.

Please note that I don't mean that as disparaging his motives - I am a great believer in capitalism - but rather as a mere observation.
