I see no reason to "pile on" unless you were there to see what happened, and if so, what was done to try to change things for the better.  Things have a way of sneaking up on us and sometimes we're the last to realize.

It's been my understanding (though I know not from where) that he originally got hooked after a hospital stay that involved a lot of prescription drugs.  The result might be the same, but if that's true it's not as if he deliberately tried to destroy himself or throw away his talents.  It's possible his recent shoulder surgery contributed to his more recent problems and the fact that MLB isn't applying a very harsh penalty makes me think there were extenuating circumstances.  Until I hear otherwise, I'm aligning myself with Bob and hoping for the best for him except against Astro pitching.
