I have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone that is able to beat those demons. I would agree that location is not a particular issue one way or another. I think people will generally find what they are looking for whether it be good or bad. I think one of the keys is a purpose. That's why I see quitting baseball as a double edged sword. If he has another activity to invest in then it could be beneficial to quit baseball. If he doesn't it would be a nightmare. I think one of the problems with addiction is that it is a psychological addiction. Sometimes people trade one addiction for another. Often times it is not chemical at all (at least outside the body). If you take Pete Rose, he could not stand being in a world where he was not competing somehow. I've seen gambling addiction up close and personal and it's just as nasty as a chemical addiction. Of course, I'm not saying Hamilton is there at all. I just know he's a world class athlete and those guys are successful because they are ultra-competitive.
