That's true Proark, Ruiz would still have been an asset. In terms of strikeouts versus home runs, the prevailing wisdom is that a strikeout is just another out. I think that definition/viewpoint is fluid. In late 1990s/2000s baseball it was a lot more true. You could put more of premium on power production. I think as offensive production goes down there will be more of a premium on contact and what I like to call "productive outs." The key to being a data driven team is to make sure you stay one step ahead of where the data is going. I think that is what Moneyball was all about. It was about understanding what was being undervalued at the time. As pitching gains more of a foothold, the ability to maximize the utility of your outs comes more into the forefront.
