Garner reminds me of Dierker in his managing style except I think Garner is more upbeat than Dierk. Both will confound those who think everything should be done by the book. They play their hunches and they like to force the issue with speed. When it works (like batting Ausmus with two outs in the ninth of Game 4 of the LDS instead of Bagwell), he looks like a genius. When it doesn't, he's wide open to second guessing. You really have to accept the bad with the good regarding Phil just like it was with Dierker. So far, either he's led the team to two LCSes and one WS or he's blown one LCS and one WS, depending on your perspective. I'm inclined to see the former instead of the latter.
