Which is exactly why players seek no-trade clauses all the time and why teams don't like to give them out. My comment was directed at the guy who posted that Beltran would not have needed a no-trade clause in Houston because he would have been a 10-and-5 guy there eventually. My argument is that he would not have necessarily lasted 5 years in Houston if he had a Hidalgo-like dropoff, that the Astros would have tried to trade him in that scenario.

Furthemore, I agree with your points that the negotiations with the Astros were a sham, that the no-trade clause was never a factor because the Astros were never a serious option for the Beltran/Boras camp.
