Amy - the Dbacks were being fascetious. They weren't serious about asking for Lidge, they were just getting across that they won't trade Tony Clark for whatever reason, and they decided they would be a-holes about it. They be surprised if the Astros never deal with them for a while.

Since you know all of the information, you must also be aware that Arizona initiated the talks with the Astros, first offering Clark for Lidge then adding Counsell to the deal. The Astros balked, and Arizona countered with Backe and Qualls for Clark (these were talks prior than the no-waiver deadline). After the Astros nixed that offer there were no more talks until the last 2-3 days. That's when Arizona offered Counsell (cleared waivers) for Nieve and Hirsh (minor league players do not need to clear waivers). The Astros obviously declined that offer too (Counsell has only played in the IF).

In either case, the Diamondbacks were not joking or trying to be humorous or funny with their offers.
