Ryan,

Matt Anderson consistently hit 100 MPH when he was with the Tigers and where is he now? This is my whole problem with the traditional scouting community. Yes, 100 MPH is nice and the fans "ooh and aah" but it must actually lead to something to be worth something. In other words, you either need to place that pitch consistently or develop secondary pitches.

Has anyone ever wondered how Roger Clemens can be more effective now with a 92-93 MPH fastball than he was earlier in his career with the 96-98 fastball? It's about placement and developing news ways to beat hitters. Most big league hitters can hit a 100 MPH fastball if they know it is coming and if it doesn't have any movement. Those same hitters are helpless if you accompany that fastball with effective breaking stuff and good location.

This is the same problem we had when we salivated over Chad Harville. Harville actually hit 100 on the gun this year. Where is he now? Meanwhile, we traded Kirk Saarloos and ended up in Oakland's rotation. Whoops...... Velocity is nice, but give me someone that has multiple pitches and can hit spots over a hard THROWER any day of the week.
