I know I can be accused of beating a dead horse, but let me beat a different end of the horse. It was reported in another thread that Everett is a free agent to be. I don't know how true this is because players must have six years of service time before they become eligible for free agency. Everett only has five years after this season. However, let's assume that is true.
Looking at the free agent market, only Julio Lugo is available from the crop of potential regular shortstops. We all know he is not an option, so the Astros are left with the possibility of being stuck with Everett. Now, I know many of you bristle at the choice of wording there, but in this market Everett could command around five million dollars a season. This is especially true if he is awarded the Gold Glove in the off-season. Is Everett really worth that much to the Astros? That would be about twice as much as he's making now.
I know you know where this is going so I might as well spare everyone the preamble. Doesn't this make a Tejada deal that much more timely? Yes, we could acquire him in the off-season if we really want to give up on Everett. Yes, the cost might be less in players, but with the club potentially four games out of the wild card tonight doesn't it just make too much sense to get this deal done now?
Yes, if they demand Hirsh I would say no, but I wouldn't hang up the phone. I would finagle another collection of players in front of them (Lidge in place of Hirsh) to get this deal done. Again, my considerations have always been about 2007 and beyond. Getting a good hitter for the stretch drive is secondary, but a good bonus to have.

I'm down with OBP (yeah you know me).
