Posts: 334 (11/25/2006 4:52 PM) Astros Fan Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None Well, there's one name talked about here no longer available. -------------------------------------------------------------------- per rotoworld: The Diamondbacks have reportedly acquired Doug Davis, Dana Eveland and David Krynzel from the Brewers for Johnny Estrada, Claudio Vargas and Greg Aquino. We have to give the edge to the Diamondbacks here. Even though he's just one year away from free agency, Davis qualifies as the most valuable property in the deal. Estrada should be an upgrade over Damian Miller, but he's not a huge one. The bigger upgrade is that the Brewers won't have to rely on a weak backup for 50 games. Of the other four players, Eveland is probably the best bet for the future. Vargas is a reasonable fifth starter, but that's all he is. Aquino still has a chance to be a decent setup man. Krynzel has lost almost all of his value and shouldn't make an impact in the crowded Arizona outfield.

I like Estrada (and wish the Astros had given him a look-see), but I was surprised that the Brewers had to give up as much as they did for him. Since Estrada isn't that big an improvement over the Brewer's current catcher, it seemed like this only helps the Brewers marginally. My conclusion is that the D-backs helped themselves a lot more than the Brewers. Doug Davis is a decent, serviceable lefthanded starter who had a medicre year, but could well put up good numbers like he did in 05. Pitchers like that are pretty valuable. And unless Mike Maddux can figure out a way to improve Vargas' control, it seems to me that this diminishes the Brewers' rotation. The D-backs also picked up a young lefthanded pitching prospect, Eveland, who didn't do well in his brief ML appearances but could well turn into a steal for the D-backs. I don't mind seeing the Brewers come out on the bad end of a trade, since they are in the NL Central. Over the past year or so, I have been impressed with the Arizona front office and their moves.

At least now, the Astros will only see him once or twice a year.

The contract includes a mutual option for a fourth year that could bring the overall package to more than $33 million, the source said. Wolf turned down bigger money from the Phillies because he wanted to pitch near his home in California. Eaton is a big risk for a 3 year contract; he hasn't been able to pitch many innings in a season due to injury issues. In my mind, Wolf was the best option for the Astros if Pettitte did not return.

I thought about Barajas, myself. But his numbers last year aren't that great, and I think there is a very good chance that Quintero would out-perform him offensively. Barajas last season: .256, .298, .410. For that matter, Eric Munson might be able to put up a line like that.

I want something - anything - to give me assurance we'll give another catcher a shot to play 2 out of 5 days, if not 3, and I don't have that confidence with the organization.

If the Cubs were to pick up Schmidt, I would think that they have to be taken seriously as a contender in the NL Central.

But regardless, I already consider the Cubs a threat in the NL CENTRAL for 2007. I think Lou Piniella will do some good things there. And you have to consider the defending World Series Champions' St. Louis Cardinals the favorite to win the 2007 NL Central, just because they're the World Series Champions. But of course, if the Astros can re-sign Clemens and Pettitte, I think we would be the favorites to win the 2007 NL Central, even ahead of the Cardinals. As usual, the key will be staying healthy, especially with so many old players.

FA signings are happening at a more rapid pace now.

FA signings are happening at a more rapid pace now. I'm glad the Astros signed Carlos Lee and Woody Williams a day after Thanksgiving. While there is still a little more work for the Astros' front office to accomplish this off-season, the fact they made two big additions is a good sign of them being serious about doing something they haven't done since 2001 ( 6 long years ) and that is trying to win the 2007 NL Central. The Astros have already had their best off-season in at least 3 years, and there is still another big signing or two on the way for the Houston Astros. We just have to be a little more patient.
