That's a bad sign. If the Yankees didn't think they were getting Pettitte, my guess is they would've taken Lilly, since he was practically begging to play there. Hope Andy's playing them, but we'll see.

10 million a year for a pitcher who is one game over .500 for his career. 59-58. Insane money for a pitcher that is the definition of mediocrity.

cubfan,
You can't seriously believe that Ted Lilly is worth $10 million per year. I know that is what the market is dictating this season...but that doesn't mean you have to spend it like this. Especially for a pitcher that tends to give up a lot of hr's (about 28 per year...not a good thing in Chicago) and has a relatively high WHIP. Essentially, the Cubs have dictated the entire market this offseason. Bloated contracts to Soriano, Ramierez, and now Lilly have driven up prices like crazy...to the point that some owners are now lamenting the CBA they just signed. Keep it up Cubbies. All this money and you're only slightly better than the last place team of last season. Maybe at least you'll finish ahead of the Pirates. |

Quote: Hope the south wind isn't blowing too hard when Lilly takes the pad at Wrigley....28 gopher balls allowed in 2006. He isn't worth 10 million a season, but AP isn't worth 12-15 million either. Teams that are after FA's are overpaying like crazy this offseason. |

Do I think Lilly is worth 10 million? Absolutely not, but the question should be, "Am I happy that the Cubs paid market value to acquire a LH starter that strikes out twice as many as he walks and should win 15 games for the Cubs?" The answer is an emphatic YES.
Like it or not market values have skyrocketed this year and it not the Cubs that are doing it. If we didn't make a pre-emptive strike on Soriano (and that's exactly what it was) somebody else would have shelled out just as much or more. Same with Ramirez. Same with Lilly. (except that those weren't pre-emptive) When the Dodgers outbid us last year for Furcal our GM called it crazy money. Well the Dodgers got to the playoffs and are still spending money on more FA's this year. The taste of last place is bitter Hendry doesn't want to re-live it. |
