Clack - I remember that game vividly. I was listening to the game at the start and then went out to dinner with my then-girlfriend. After dinner, the game had just gone into extras when she yelled at me to turn it off (see the "ex" in "girlfriend"). After having a drink, I drove her home and was surprised to find it still on at 11:00pm. We, um, watched TV for a little while, and I drove home.
Back then, my way home took me right past the Astrodome, where I noticed all of the lights still on! I flipped on the radio and lo and behold the game was still being played. I turned the car around and went inside the Dome since nobody was there to take a ticket, whereupon the last out was promptly made. I blame myself. |

I watched the game on TV from beginning to end, and do remember it vividly. It ended at about 3:15 a.m. or so.
When Doran finally scored on the soft liner that knicked off Valenzuela's glove (first baseman Fernando Valenzuela), he was more relieved than anything and just collapsed with joy into the guys waiting for him at home to celebrate. I also recall that either the game right before or probably the game the next day, it went 13 innings after Bidge hit a 2-0 out bottom of the 9th homer to tie it (3 run shot...?). The Astros were literally out of pitchers after those 2 games and had to call up an unknown by the name of Mark Portugal to pitch the next game (and he did quite well if I recall). That was a stretch of about ten games that season where the Astros were playing like the '27 Yankees. Good memories. |

McGonigel's Mucky Duck has a Mark Portugal sandwich.
************************ www.mcgonigels.com/ The Mark Portugal sliced turkey, avocado and mayonnaise on a French roll, broiled under muenster cheese and crisp bacon, served with chips and a dill pickle wedge. 9.95 ************************* It's a great place to hear music, btw. ________________

I was there! Stayed til the end. Started out in right-center field, then started moving around closer as the game went on and people left. Ended up behind 1st base dugout. Emptiest I ever saw the Dome while a game was in progress. Couldn't have been more than a couple thousand people.
Got home, slept fast and made the Sunday game as well, which I think was either 11am or 12. Got there a little late and the Dodgers had a lead of, I think, 4-0 in the first. That game went extra innings as well. Did the Astros win? Then they went on the road, played the Padres Monday night and won that one in extras. Lots of baseball in 3 days. |
