So far the Texans have signed the following:
Free Agents:
- RB Ahman Green: I like the signing from a football perspective, but we might have overpaid a bit. I'm hoping we can get a speedy back in the draft and have a 2 back system. That should help keep Green fresh and help the young back develop. I dont' think we have that player in our system right now. Age and injury history are definitely a concern.
- LB Danny Clark: I couldn't find the exact details of the contract, but it looks like we might have gotten good value. He's not a top teir player, but has been productive on bad teams. He didn't start with the Saints last year, but considering the Texans don't have much cap room, it's good to see them going after "value" guys.
- OL Jordan Black: Another good value guy. He was a LT starter for a pretty good O-Line in KC. Considering the amount of money going to OL in free agency, it's good to see them get another value guy.
- Re-sign P Chad Stanley: I was kind of hoping we could upgrade the punter position. Chad was unimpressive last year and had some pretty crappy games.
- Re-sign CB Roc Alexander: Good street free agent, so I don't mind keeping him for depth, but I'd like to see us get some more secondary help.
- Re-sign DE N.D. Kalu: I like Kalu and thought he made some good plays, but he's not a starter. Again, I like keeping him from a depth perspective, but we still need D-Line help.
- Re-sign OT Ephraim Salaam: Not a Salaam fan. We used him last year because of emergency, and they say he's great as a leader and locker room guy, but we still need much help on O-line.
- Extend WR Andre Johnson: Best move of the offseason so far. With the lack of success on this team, I worry about our few good players sticking around. AJ is one of the best WR in the game and it's crucial to keep these guys that we can build a team around.
Overall, I think we've done a nice job building depth, but we still are short on impact players. We don't have a lot of cap space to be big players in free agency, so we're going to need a draft as good as we had last year top to bottom. Right now we still have big questions at QB, WR, OL, DL, and Secondary and are, at best, a year away from competing for the playoffs -- more likely 2.
