$3.20 a gallon...possibly headed for $4 bucks a gallon this spring. I work in sales...to lower my income I have a mileage deduction on my taxes. If it's
$4 a gallon, I can't afford to drive...meaning I have less of a deduction. Gas prices are killing me. DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'M SICK OF IT!!!!!!!!!!

Come to the Norteast. $3.20 that is CHEAP!!!! Places around here are $3.37-3.44 and that is for the 89 octane. The Super is up in the 3.70s. But hey Exxon Mobil made a 40 billon quarterly profit last quarter so who are we to complain. |

You probably save in other areas. For example, I take public transportation, and fill up my gas tank about once every two months. So gas prices don't
bother me at all. However, any cost of living calculator will tell you that every $1 where I am (DC) goes much further in Texas.

I feel for you Flastrohs. Many of us are in the same boat (unhappy about the price of gas). With regard to living in a small town, look at it this way; you
probably don't have far to travel to get places, so you don't use that much gas. Living in Houston, I drive 15 miles a day just to take one of my kids
to school.
Here's my short answer: Buy a Hybrid! |

Leave America...the Brits were paying $5.00 a gallon in 88-89...we are spoiled... We will pay $8.00 - $9.00 dollars per gallon of water or Coke(R) when
purchased in the 20oz size...P.S. Love your other post Flash...Go to your 7-11 and do the math...

Gas prices this weekend jumped to $3.29 a gallon all over the Texas Hill Country, which was definitely a shock to the wife and I after having payed about $3.20
or less before leaving Houston. But, then again it was spring break weekend for so many the oil companies just HAD to take advantage, right? (Sorry, I
don't have a video.
 )
As far as pricing and the oil companies twitching as soon as there's a hint of an security concern worldwide, or a potential slowdown of production somewhere, I have to smirk everytime there's speculation by the media as to what caused a simple 1-cent increase in the price of a barrel of oil. These companies are motivated by GREED and nothing else. I know, I worked for one of the majors for over 30 years, and saw firsthand them being controlled by Chavez & his Venezuelan national oil company; time and again every January, right after the refinery's turn-around for maintenance period at the end of each year, and when Venezuela's profits from crude oil deliveries were at their lowest -- Chavez would holdup delivery of tankers either in their home port or halfway across the Gulf of Mexico to barter for more money, until a new deal was reached that met his liking. Of course, we on the refinery end had to in the meantime go about shutting down units until either the crude flow was restored, or alternative sources on the spot market was found. Either way, it would send ripples of concern across the industry AND the market -- which the company would use to their advantage for public sympathy ("losses during the 4th Quarter due to maintenance shutdowns and disruptions in crude oil deliveries") -- ALL soothed and solved by an increase at the pump to recover in their profits in the following 1st Quarter. Amazing how the color of GREEN is so soothing and covers a world of problems, isn't it? In the meantime, we get gouged every 1st Quarter. So don't sweat the current prices; we'll pay no matter what, they'll get their cyclical swing or upturn they were looking for ("market re-adjustment") and we'll eventually be paying what the rest of the world has been paying for gasoline -- and they'll just keep right on along their merry way! (P.S. -- I'm no longer working for that company, and neither are they affiliated with Chavez & CITGO (the U.S. marketing division of the Venezuelan national oil company), either due to U.S. government pressure or a realization that it was just BAD business to do business with them. BTW, if you're not boycotting Citgo gas stations, it wouldn't break anyone's heart around here if you started. "DON'T do business with a 3rd-world-dictator" is not a bad motto to live by.)

I never had to go more than about 5-6 miles to get to school in Houston when I was growing up. Though some of the recent rises have been sharp, gas has gone up pretty much in line with 1st Class postage the last 40 years. You could mail a letter for
a nickel in 1968 and gas was about 34-35 cents a gallon then. I suspect gas will go down a lot sooner than postage goes down.

Well guys, I'm trying to purchase a new bike soon, if I can find one that can take my type of size on it. A regular bike -- not motorcycle. I figure it
will save me a lot of money on gas prices. I need to start going out and riding it around the park some of these weekends.

Flastros, not just the prices at the pump, but what about the cost of milk increasing as well?
The way things are going, I'm afraid that one day in the near future I won't even be able to sit down for breakfast and enjoy a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. I'm already satisfied with the thought of just riding a big man's bicycle around the city of Houston, or better yet, taking the Metro bus to places I need to go. At the end of the day, I can manage to get around without actually driving myself, even if it means I'm getting a ride from a family member or friend. In my current position, I just don't think I'm all that interested in purchasing a new car, especially with the gas prices being so high. I simply can't afford it. I was barely able to pay for a new digital cable box this past weekend, and I'm happy just to have digital cable and a high-speed Internet connection right now. I have a lot of old baseball and football cards from the '70s, '80s and '90s, and a few of them are worth good money. I may be able to make a lot of money if I choose to sell some of my best cards, and I also have a collection of old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action-figurines -- the complete set that I'm going to put up for sell on EBAY soon. I may be able to make some money by simply selling a lot of my items ... I can also sell some of my numerous DVDs. I just hope it doesn't come down to that ... But quite frankly, in today's society, unless you're rich, you almost have to make some hard decisions sometimes.

Light, sweet crude for May delivery rose to a new trading high of $113.93 a barrel in early morning electronic trading. The previous high of $112.21 was set April 9.
