I'm just wondering what you guys think of Pete Townshend?
Personally, I'd have to say he's a very talented singer and guitarist.
I also hear he writes his own music... So he's a great songwriter also...

I've heard this song being played in a lot of movies that I've seen lately, and several people tell me this guy is really good live in concert.
Depending on your musical taste ( I'm more open-minded to all types of music ), but I think it's a nice little song.

Ryan, you're only asking about one of the greatest guitar players, and the backbone of one of the greatest bands (The Who) of all time. And if I'm not
mistaken, The Who are members of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Roger Daltry on vocals, John Entwhistle on bass, Keith Moon on drums, and Townshend on
guitar were world-beaters for years, and their music has been a part of the world music scene in one form or another for years. Surely you've heard of them
before.

The 2007 movie Dan in Real Life is one of the more recent movies I've seen this song appear in.
There was a scene in the movie when Steve Carrell and Dan Cook were singing this song. Dan in Real Life

The Who was the greatest live band ever, but I tried to stay away from the music she liked -- more of a dumb rebellion thing on my part, but I
can't lie, I think The Who is amazing and I enjoy Pete Townshend's music in particular.

Unfortunately, Townsend went deaf after a mishap at one of their later concerts. That is a good song, but his stuff just never approached the stuff he did with
the Who. BTW, he wrote most of their songs. I like the Who, but not as much as the Beatles or Pink Floyd (my avatar).

While I'm not a
huge fan of The Who (perhaps because I've never seen them live), I have and do like them a bunch. They rank just below some of my favorites of all time.
RyanED, if you are interested in their music, a Greatest Hits CD is always a good idea, but one of their best albums/CDs is
Who's Next, which was released in 1971. If you listen to the radio at all, you should recognize several songs on it, or for that matter, if your
mother is a big fan, she most likely will have the album/CD. There are some great, great songs on it, and there's even a
DVD of it, which I may now have to look into revieiwing for possible purchase.

If you want to watch a really good documentary on The Who rent or buy "The Kids Are Alright". All sorts of concert footage and interviews from their
earlier days. I don't think it's quite like being there but it captures the pure raw power of their live performaces when they were younger.

Now, for Pete Townshend, one of my favorite Pete Townshend songs (that he performs and sings in The Who) is Eminence Front. When I saw the title of this thread, I thought - at-oh, now I have to admit I am not a big Who fan. I'm sorry!! I just never really got into their music. ( I must say, Roger's got beautiful blue eyes, though.) Except for Eminence Front. Awesome song. That would be my favorite, and probably the only time I do not turn the radio station on a Who song. I actually crank it up and sing along with Eminence Front. |

Guys...you know we're getting older when the kids these days don't know about "The Kids are Alright."
Young pups with their mamby-pamby I-pods and shufflers...In my day, we listened to our music on an old Westinghouse AM radio by the kitchen sink as we hand washed all of our dishes from the dinner that was cooked with an oven that you had to light with a match...and we LIKED IT! Never heard of the Who...my god...what's wrong with these kids these days?

From Wikipedia>>>>>
Who Are You (song)From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Who Are You", composed by Pete Townshend, is the title track on The Who's 1978 release, Who Are You, the last album released before drummer Keith Moon's death in September of 1978. It was released as a double-A sided single with the John Entwistle composition "Had Enough", also featured on the album.
[edit] LyricsThe album version includes an extra verse compared to the much shorter single. Additionally, a "lost verse" mix of the song was released on the 1996 reissue of Who Are You, with a completely different second verse: "I used to check my reflection / Jumping with my cheap guitar / I must have lost my direction, cause I ended up a superstar/ One night I was in the boardroom/ Affected by the human race/ You can learn from my mistakes, but you're posing in the glass again". The song is unusual in that it contains two clearly audible instances of the word "fuck" at 2:16 and 5:43 (at 2:14 and 4:27 in the single edit version), yet has been played frequently in its entirety on rock radio stations. The expletives did, however, cause controversy when ABC's unedited broadcast of The Who's Live 8 performance retained them.[1] [edit] InterpretationAccording to Townshend, the song is about an encounter he had with Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols after a difficult 13-hour meeting with Allan Klein related to song royalties. Later, the drunken Townshend was awakened outside the bar by a policeman, but the man offered to let him go if he could "get up and walk away."[2] Townshend has also written that the song has a spiritual context related to Eastern mysticism. The line "Who are you? Who, Who?" is directed at God, according to Townshend, as "Hu" is an ancient name for God. [edit] VideoA promotional video was filmed on May 9, 1978; originally, the intent was to have The Who simply mime to the single version's backing track with Roger Daltrey adding live vocals, but the decision was made to also re-record the guitars, drums, and piano. Only John Entwistle's bass and the synthesizer backing remained intact from the original version. This version was later released on The Kids Are Alright documentary. The video also makes Keith Moon's poor state of health evident as it shows him to be significantly overweight. I think the promotional video is the one I link on the above post.

Flastrohs wrote:Both of those videos are classics, Flas. Thanks. In Join Together, I know Roger Daltry was playing the Jews Harp, but that instrument Pete Townshend was playing both at the beginning of the video and from 2:16 to 2:33 looked like a gigantic harmonica. Is that what it was? I've never seen one that large. Here's a good video of an old classic Magic Bus (1972) and then more current version of the same song Magic Bus. Both are live performances, and Keith Moon is missing from the later performance, but the video in the 1st one is not so great. Also, another great very early performance of what is probably The Who's very first hit song and the song that I believe became famous for Pete Townshend's guitar smashing gig - My Generation. Finally, there's the great Pinball Wizard, from the Rock Opera Tommy. This is all bringing back great memories and making me realize that I was bigger fan of The Who than I actually remember. |

Keith Moon...from Wikipedia....
"Death Moon was Paul McCartney's guest at a film preview of The Buddy Holly Story on the evening of 6 September 1978. After dining with Paul and Linda McCartney, Moon and his girlfriend, Annette Walter-Lax, returned to a flat on loan from Harry Nilsson in Curzon Place, London (Near Shepherd Market), where Moon died of overdose of Clomethiazole (Heminevrin), a medication he was taking as part of a programme to wean him off alcohol. The police investigation determined there were about 32 pills in his system, some undissolved.[15] He was 32 years old. Moon died in the same room in which Cass Elliot of The Mamas & the Papas had died four years earlier. On the audio DVD commentary to The Criterion Collection's release of the Monty Python film Life of Brian, Eric Idle talks about the dinner party. Idle relates that Moon was very excited about his upcoming role as a prophet in the movie. After launching into his speech for the film, Idle and Moon exchanged a "big, warm hug," with Idle commenting that "he was just such a wonderful enthusiast." Moon died a couple of weeks after the release of Who Are You. On the album cover, Moon is seated on a chair back-to-front to hide the weight he gained over three years (as discussed in Tony Fletcher's book "Dear Boy"). The chair is labeled "NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY." Moon was cremated. His ashes were scattered in the Gardens of Remembrance at Golders Green Crematorium in London." |

Won't Get Fooled Again
Moon died 3 months after this was made. John Entwistle... "DeathJohn Entwistle died in a hotel room at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on June 27, 2002 one day before the scheduled first show of The Who's 2002 US tour. The Las Vegas medical examiner determined that death was due to a heart attack induced by an undetermined amount of cocaine. Though the amount in Entwistle's bloodstream was not great, the drug caused his coronary arteries, already damaged due to a pre-existing heart condition, to contract. Entwistle used cocaine throughout much of his adult life. Employees at the Hard Rock Hotel refuse to reveal the room in which Entwistle died."............ from Wikipedia.

Thanks, Flastrohs, for the "Won't Get Fooled Again" video link above; I wonder if it was filmed in Houston? because at the concert at the former
Summit that I saw the group perform, Daltrey and Townsend were wearing the same clothes. Brings back memories for me.
