The Astros are 2-3, but they could very easily be 4-1 if not for a couple of hard-fought losses by one run at San Diego. The important thing to me is how well
the entire starting rotation for the Astros has looked so far. With the exception of a somewhat shaky start by Wandy Rodriguez, I really liked what I saw out
of Backe, Chacon and Sampson.
Roy Oswalt also pitched a good ball game during the season opener, even though he struggled more than he made it look easy, but he did a good job of not giving up many earned runs.
One time through the starting rotation, my grades would be as followed...
Roy Oswalt with a score of 82.
Brandon Backe with a score of 88.
Wandy Rodriguez with a score of 74.
Shawn Chacon with a score of 87.
Chris Sampson with a score of 91.
Mind you, I'm being honest with these grades and not a homer.
Notice how I give them all passing grades...
Not bad after five games and one time through the starting rotation.
I just scored them based on how I felt they did and not so much on any particular statistics...
You can give your own scores, but overall I'm pleasantly surprised with the starting rotation.
A 2-3 record could easily be 4-1, but it's all good I guess.
If the starting rotation can pitch well all season long, we're going to challenge the Brewers and Cubs for the NL Central this year.
It's early in the regular season and not a lot to go on, but you have to like what we've seen so far.
