Round Rock is usually a pretty solid club with some very good prospects, but man look at there roster now. Pray we have no injury problems this year.

we haven't had really any position prospects at RR since burkie-poo came through in 04 (well, pence for a few weeks last year i guess) and for some reason i don't understand they are playing maysonnet at SS and keeping manzella at corpus shrug

It appears to me that, for the most part, the Astros are using Round Rock as a holding tank for marginal veterans/AAAA players who can be called up as
replacements on the big league roster if an injury occurs. For instance, if the Astros wanted to replace a bench pinch hitter, the best hitters at the moment
appear to be (OPS in parenthesis) Saccomano (.925), Gorneault (.787), House (.707), Diaz (.696), and Abercrombie (.686). None of those guys are prospects, but
none of them are really old (age 26-29). Yordany Ramirez and Paulino are "prospects" on the Round Rock roster, but neither is ready for the major
league roster yet. I wouldn't be surprised if Diaz gets hot at some point, and makes himself into a good power option off the bench.

I agree, Clack. But I think this is just another way of pointing out how thin the system actually is. As we said in the offseason, it's going to take
multiple drafts (at least 2) to get the system back in the first vestiges of shape. I'm very much looking forward to the ML draft and see what the Wade
boys come up with.

Clack, they don't have a choice but to make Round Rock a "holding tank" for underachieving veterans. They can't just fold their AAA
affiliate. They wouldn't (and shouldn't) call up players to AAA that aren't ready for it. A roster has to be filled and this is the only way to
fill it. You can always hope that one or two of these can catch lightning in a bottle and become a big league contributor until the prospects take their
places.
I'm excited about Brad James and Sammy Grevano. I think they can each be on the Astros by the end of next year of they continue to progress. And let's give Wade some creit. He wasn't given a strong hand to play and look what's he done. Does anyone really regret making the Tejada trade, given what we gave up to get him? Does anyone want to say signing Matsui looks like a bad move right now? Shawn Chacon? The Qualls-Burke trade for Valverde hasn't worked well so far but perhaps Valverde is turning a corner. The Villarreal deal isn't so great but we didn't give up much for him either. And the Geary-Bourn deal for Lidge really depends on how you feel about Lidge and how he would have performed if he were still here. I know Wade gets routinely trashed by various bloggers but I've got to say I'm very impressed. That may change in another 2-3 months but right now I think overall he's done a great job.

I agree that the Astros' farm system is thin. But it isn't unusual for some teams to put their highest level prospects in AA (promoting them to the bigs from there, and reserve the AAA team as a sort of taxi squad of veterans/AAAA players. The Cardinals did that for so long with the Memphis Redbirds, their AAA affiliate, that the Memphis ownership demanded that more "prospects" be placed in AAA or else they would seek to affiliate with another organization. Reportedly, the Cardinals tried to respond to that request. |

I actually recall Mr. Wade saying something to that effect. Basically saying that AA is their best evaluation level for potential prospects. I think most
GM's decide on potential players in AA.
It would be interesting to see who would win if our AA team faced off against our AAA team. |

I'm not too worried. Corpus has some talent on it. I'm especially keeping an eye on Cosby, Iorg, and Sutton on the position side. James and Norris
on the pitching side. I don't know about of single A level but I'd say were doing okay double A squad.
