Astros Fan Posts: 57 (04/26/2008 8:11 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None No matter that we lost the close one today to the Cards...I want everyone's opinion of the 6 game streak that got us back to .500, even though we are now 12-13. Does everyone feel that it may be the fire that this team needs to get the wheels turning & build confidence for the rotation & the lineup? Will Wiggy be more productive at the plate than Blum? Matsui has provided a huge spark in the 2 hole, Hunter is coming back around lower in the order... Now if we can figure out a way to light a fire under Villareal's rear end, we'd be in good shape. I'm all for keeping Byrdak & Wright in the pen, I think Wright is really starting to feel more comfortable & Byrdak will do everything possible to show he was worth the signing. What is everyone's thoughts from this point forward after winning 6 of 7? Do we think this team can stick around enought to compete, or was the little streak something that may be few & far between this season?

Astros Fan Posts: 90 (04/26/2008 8:37 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	wiggy will contribute more with the bat but he will give up a LOT more hits and runs with the lead he wears on his left hand. and yeah, allowing runs to score is just as important as driving them in hunter is STILL swinging and missing sliders and you bet your *** that TLR picked right up on that which is why he has seen exactly ONE pitch that is not a slider and that was a FB at his ankles. and unless he can learn to handle them he won't see anything but sliders for the rest of the year unless it is a pitcher who can't throw one. i'm ALSO all for keeping byrdak - seems to have been a great pickup - like wheeler back in 04. wright is so far definitely good enough to stay not sure what is wrong with villareal, but he's cheap guy that bobby cox let go so i am suspiscious. he might could need to go to AAA and work on some stuff - like keeping the ball down as for how this team is gonna do, well, they already doing better than i expected. i will be amazed if they end up the year at .500

They'll have another rough stretch in June (actually, they play head-to-head with the three contenders in the NL Central in late May) so if they are at .500 at the ASB, they are not bad off. If they continue to get good starting pitching (15 quality starts so far in 25 games), they can stay in the race and who knows? Maybe they can find an extra gear and take off. They need to get Bourn going with the bat for the offense to really click and they will need to stay healthy. The thing is, the others are getting fat off the Nationals, the Giants and the Pirates and we haven't faced any of them yet. We get them late in the year so we really have a chance to get some momentum late if we can hang in there until then. "Astro Fan Since They Were First Called Astros."

Lisa, you can keep saying Wigginton sucks playing defense, but it will never make it true. Is he Brooks Robinson? No, but he's a solid third baseman and a long way from being the butcher you describe.

No, but he's a solid third baseman and a long way from being the butcher you describe. jack, i don't know what you mean by "solid" but he is not even league average by any defensive analysis. i would be happy to see any proof otherwise. david pinto, chris dial, john dewan - none of the guys with expert analysis support your contention, but hey, maybe i've missed someone. range? definitely not good - low average to poor first move? slow footwork? poor arm accuracy? low average arm strength? good he is better than miggy cabrera, and barely better than mike lamb, but that is not saying much and by the way, please don't try to persuade me with bpro's stats because even clay davenport admits they aren't very good

I watch the games. For the most part, he makes the plays he should, which is just fine at third base. I think you are being a little dramatic with your criticism, if he was as bad as you say, then he would not have lasted 7 years playing the position for 4 different teams. It's just typical fan bullshit, either a player sucks or they are great with no in between.

I am pleased with progress the Astros made recently and believe that good things are going to happen for this year's team. There are still a lot of question marks, but as an Astros fan I am pleased with the efforts of management to field a competitor. Teams that win 100 games in a season are not even winning two out of three games in a year. I think this team will win 90 to 93 games. I am hopeful that they are in a position to add another strong arm near the trade deadline.

It's just typical fan bullshit, either a player sucks or they are great with no in between. jack, i have missed watching exactly 10 games since the ASG in 02, i am not a stat geek and i don't know how to even READ a spreadsheet. although i gotta say it is one of the coolest things ever to have someone think i should get my nose out of a spreadsheet and watch baseball games cmon, we both know that every single major league position player makes most of the plays. most plays are routine, which is why carlos lee catches simple fly balls and "makes most of the plays he should." which is why even wiggy makes at least 3 of 4 plays. however, he almost never makes any play in which he has to go to either his right or left. that is a LOT of hits. he can't get to any balls hit down the line so there are a LOT of doubles. you start adding up all the plays he doesn't make. and no i am not counting errors having to do with throws, neither. what separates fielders is the NOT routine plays. And wiggy makes a lot fewer of those than the average 3B. which is why he ALLOWS more hits and RUNS than the average. you don't think the pitchers care about whether or not the fielders make more than the routine plays? what are you talking about - great or no in between stuff? there most certainly is league AVERAGE. average means MOST PLAYERS. pence is average. tejada is average. MOST guys are average and i don't have any trouble saying that.
