If you have the new MLB Network, the calendar for Saturday January 31st includes rebroadcasts of the 2005 NLCS Games 5 and 6 plus the 2005 World Series Game 1.
The new cable channel spends much of the first month refocusing on the lopsided World Series of the past few years but there are a few gems if you dig hard
enough into their scheduling.

Which cable networks are offering the MLB network? As best I can tell, my cable company doesn't.

I have it on Direct TV..ch 213. They've been playing the 2008 World Series in the last day or two, but I have seen some good hot stove segments, vintage
game footage, and few good interviews. I'll take it.

So far I'm cautiously optimistic on the MLB Network. My concern is that it becomes all Yankees/Red Sox all the time. Doesn't appear to be the case with
the rebroadcasts of the 08 World Series so far.
Also, I very(!) much enjoyed the entire rebroadcast of Don Larsen's perfect game. Not just listening to Mel Allen call a game, not just listening to a young Vin Scully call the second part of the game, not just seeing the actual commercials from the original broadcasts, but got to see (a) Jackie Robinson playing baseball, and (b) Mickey Mantle hit a home run in the bottom of the 4th. I have to admit, that was very cool. They need more of that. Love to see Koufax' perfect game, if that's even available. And, I can't wait to see the triple play from the 1980 NLCS! (Quick aside, my friend is married to Art Howe's daughter, and he says Art says that's the number one thing anyone asks him about his career, even today.) |

If you have cable better check out your HD channels as it probably on one there also. I have Cablevision (Optimum-iO)and I get MLB network on a regular channel
149-- then its also on a HD channel 790- though I am not a real hockey fan they also offer the HD channel for the NHL network also

Many of you probably don't know the story of Doak Ewing and how he came into possession of Don Larsen's no-hit game telecast. Back in the 1950s, major
televised sporting events were filmed by kinescope which was essentially setting up a movie camera to film a tv set (videotape having yet to be invented). The
networks had an agreement to record these games on movie film and ship them overseas for our fighting men in Korea and elsewhere. Those who received the films
were under orders to destroy them after being shown.
A typical baseball game might take up 6-8 reels of film. From time to time, a reel of film shows up in some dead soldier's attic somewhere that family members comb through while selling off his belongings. Usually, these reels hold only two innings or less. Ewing runs a business called "Rare Sportsfilms" where he refurbishes old movie film to its optimal viewing capacity. For that, he runs an ad in hobby magazines offering to buy old reels of film. Much of what he gets aren't worth much but, one day, Ewing hears from a woman in Oregon. She says she was cleaning out some old soldier's attic and she noticed several cans that said only "Larsson" (note the misspelling). She doesn't know what's on the film but would he be interested? Sure, he says. It turns out that the cans of film contain the televised Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, all except the first inning and the first two batters of the second inning - exactly what you saw on MLB Network. So, what happened to the film of the first inning? Doak calls the lady back and asks where the first reel might be. She said she didn't know but the soldier also kept a movie projector in the attic which they had sold years ago and there was already a reel on the projector. Somebody somewhere may have the first inning and not even know it! Games 6 and 7 of the 1952 World Series exist for the most part and show from time to time on ESPN Classics. They are believed to be the oldest televised broadcasts known to exist. Game 3 of the 1958 World Series exists in almost complete form which Ewing restored and now offers for sale. All known complete games that exist are World Series games until 1969 when a copy of a Cubs-Phillies Game of the Week somehow survived. Ewing restored Larsen's gem but decided it was too historic to sell to the public. Instead, he used it as part of a charity event in 2006 on the 50th anniversary of Larsen's feat where Larsen, Berra and other old Yankees attended where seats were sold for about $500 a person. Before January 1st, that was the only public showing of the film. Since I saw no credit given at all to Ewing or Rare Sportsfilms on the MLB Network broadcast, it make me wonder whether MLB bought a copy of the game from him or if they just seized the films as their own property, as they have done to others that sold old baseball broadcasts. If the latter, I feel sad for people like Ewing who run their small niche business and then have their assets seized by the likes of Bud Selig. As Paul Harvey would say, now you know "the rest of the story".

if you go to MLB network web page it has a box to put your zip code in and it will tell who has it in your area

KoolAde2 wrote: Also, after you do that, if your cable provider is indicated as NOT carrying the network, if you want, the web page will automatically send a letter to the provider in your name asking the provider to carry the network. For instance, in my case, I live in Austin and use Grande cable Time Warner does carry the network in Austin, but Grande doesn't. So, if you are also a Grande subscriber, please go to the MLB network web site and go through the process so that you have a letter sent. |

Correct Clack. I did the same thing for AT&T. I saw Hazel Mae is on MLB Network which is reason enough to get it.

I think the idea is that if a lot of people request it they will add it.

A bunch of us keep asking Grande to add it, but they seem to think that the NFL network should make all of their viewers ecstatic. Go figure.

Now what I think in the whole scheme is really funny as up Here Cablevision and NFL have been in a fight and I can't get NFL as Cablevision wants TWO
dollars more a month-- but when MLB network started there was no Two Dollars a month fee such thing and I can get it regular or HD go figure with that crap.
It shouldn't be a Upgrade package to get any where from what I am seeing.

The thing is that I would probably add the two dollars a month to keep from watch the Red Sox/Yankees network in Bristol.
