Does anyone around here watch Deadwood or Carnivale? (Both are on HBO.)
The reason I ask is that TM and I are avid fans of both, yet we don't know anyone else who does! I gather the *ahem* offcolor language in Deadwood was the major turn-off for a number of folks, but the characters are wonderful and it's a beautifully made series. You don't even notice the F***'s and C*********'s after a while. I would imagine the air of a mining camp/town in the 1870's was quite thick with such invective, actually.
Carnivale is also well-crafted, but quite difficult to follow -- unusual characters plied with eerie plot twists as Good and Evil strive to outmaneuver each other in the Dust Bowl of the 1930's. The creator of the series says that it grew from his wondering what would happen to an ordinary man if he woke up one day to discover that he's a prophet.
It's such a challenging story that some 13,000 posts have been made on the HBO Carnivale board by fans trying to solve it.
