Garner pulls Backe in Game 1 during the 4th inning after a broken bat bloop hit and an intentional walk. Before that he was very effective and had a low enough pitch count.
Garner pulls Munro in Game 2 during the 4th inning after back to back hits (a HR and soft single). Before that he was very effective and had a very low pitch count.
In those two instances, the results were immediate and dramatically abysmal.
Garner also pulled Oswalt in Game 2 of the ATL series after back to back hits, but while he was still quite effective and had a low pitch count. Lidge pulled him out of that one, but then Lidge was lost for later in the game, and they lost.
I like Garner as a manager, and I don't think he generally has an automatic quick hook like Jimy did. But in the playoffs he sure does with the young pitchers. In fact, he's 0-3 in the postseason when he goes to middle relief so soon.
A lesson to be learned, perhaps?
