Why are the mets moving Matsui to second base?
Is Reyes moving to short?
What's the deal? I can't find any info on it.

I read in one or two of the preseason mags that they felt Matsui doesn't have the arm strength they want.

Reyes came up through their system as a SS, but the moved him to 2nd when they signed Matsui. I don't remember if it was said that Matsui insisted on that or if they just did it so he wouldn't have to change positions while making the adjustment to playing in America.
I don't think there was ever any doubt that Reyes had better tools for playing SS, but the Mets were fighting the PR battle in New York as much as, or maybe more than, they were making field decisions. It's the same reason Cameron is being moved out of center in favor of Beltran even though most experts that have seen them both play seem to give Cameron the nod as the better CFer. |

Matsui said he wanted to play and only play short last year. When the Mets realized that his fielding was not as good as they hoped the announced that he would move to 2nd for this season. Reyes was hurt most of last year so that is why he did not play short or 2nd and Art Howe did not want to move Matsui in the middle of the year because there was no replacement at short. Matsui got hurt and that pretty much killed the move. This year Reyes is at short and Kaz is at 2nd no matter what.
