But I REALLY don't like it if we have to give up Burke. I guess we can't get anyone to take Redding and Duckworth. I hope the Mets refuse to do this deal. I'm not sure I wouldn't rather have Byrnes than Cameron anyway.

He may not be a natural CF but he does have 200+ innings at the position and we can try him and Lane both out there and the better one gets CF and the other gets LF with Bidge returning to 2B. Plus, we get a 20-HR guy to add to the lineup who is younger than Cameron and will probably produce even better numbers going from the AL West to the Crawfish Boxes. He'll cost far less than Cameron too and Byrnes is another B! Short-term, it settles several issues and doesn't provide too big a roadblock for Taveras if/when he is ready. I wish Burke had shown a little better in his brief chances to play in The Show last year. I know it wasn't enough to provide a good sample but we really need good hitting this year and somebody to put around Bagwell until Berkman is ready. If it's the Mets who are balking, then let's cut the Mets out of the deal as part of their punishment for you-know-who.

If Purpura is intent on trading him though, I'd rather have Byrnes than Cameron. My question is, why does Beane want to trade Byrnes? He's still young and cheap, a good producer and a sparkplug. Are they that sure that Nick Swisher is the real deal? The A's are really going to have a young team this year--even more so if they trade Byrnes. They're starting to remind me of the '91 Astros.

I think there's an arbitration hearing pending and maybe the A's aren't so sure of their case. And even if they win this go-round they may be worried about what he'd cost in the future. How's this: Burke and Duckworth for Byrnes and Keith Ginter? If they had Burke they might just want to free up a possible logjam a 2nd.

Good producer and sparkplug is one way to describe him. Another way is that he's a really nice guy and awfully fun to watch. But he's likely to be a league average hitter next year at a prime offensive position, and he fields about as well as I would if I tied bricks to my feet. He is way overvalued right now, and Burke for Cameron for Byrnes would be an insanely terrific deal for Oakland.

Yes, they could be busts. How do you know until you give them a shot? I'd prefer to wait and make an in-season deal, if necessary.

Yes,Cameron can give us the defense we need up the middle. But,he is inconsistent at the plate,is overpaid,and has health concerns.Giving up Burke in this deal would be a major mistake.Cameron is a very average player IMO,who is on the decline..at best a stopgap.

And I've also said we should get another OFer so long as options are out there. However, give up Burke? I would hope we learned our lesson from the Buck trade, and if we haven't we certaintly will this season, as well as when Ausmus is gone. I'm pretty pumped about this season, and I'm becoming more optimistic about Taveras, for no explainable reason. I would love to see Cameron here for this season, but not at Burke's expense. We have a great system with many prospects in A and AA. Maybe we should wait until May or June to see what new prospects develop to open up other trade possibilities and give Burke and Taveras a FAIR chance to prove or disprove themselves. For example 2001 when we put Ensberg and Everett back in the minors, when they could've been the missing pieces in a championchip run.

Agent Mike Nicotera said the arthroscopic wrist surgery Cameron had in December required only minimal repair of frayed cartilage and the wrist showed no signs of a feared tear. The outfielder already has been cleared for all activities except swinging a bat at full speed. He'll likely begin doing that the first week of March, leaving four full weeks of batting practice before Opening Day. but wait, there's more! a third link has him two weeks ahead of schedule and swinging a bat. link #3 (broken) i think he'll be ready by opening day barring setbacks. sorry to burst your bubbles. edit the link code for this board is weird. i fixed the links.

Posts: 2350 (02/21/2005 10:08 PM) Astros Fan Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	yes, im sure some reports say he will be ready opening day. some reports say he wont be ready until may. some reports say pettitte wont be ready until 1 or 2 months into the season. some reports say berkman will be back opening day (although i will give cameron a much better shot). some reports say the moon is made out of green cheese. in any case, regardless if cameron is ready opening day or not, we need a stop gap measure until berkman is back. cameron is way to overpriced and burdensome to be a good stop gap measure, and is a piss poor long term solution as well.

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I kinda disagree with you, bob; Cameron hopefully would not cost us an arm and a leg (at least not any that we'd pinned too many hopes on), but he'd go a long way at making the Astros look like most teams of MLB, with a speedy CF who could contribute on offense. Again, hopefully. Remember, we've got to make up ground in bringing back some offense to a lineup stripped of the HR's and RBI's of Kent & Beltran. Sitting on our hands and watching the rest of baseball conduct business to improve while we hedged all our eggs in the Beltran basket was a mistake we've got to take action to correct. Don't you agree? And even if Cameron gives us only 2-3 good years, he'd go a long way to carry us into the Bidge-less and Bag-less era, or at least make the transition less painful.
