Because the master was giving out lessons in GUTS tonight. I love Roy, but he just doesn't establish the inside of plate enough. He needs to sit some guys on their butts so his outside fastball is that much more effective.

The one thing that Roger has every time he steps on the mound is an arrogance about him. His cockiness is like another tool or trick. A player the caliber of Bonds can understand and appreciate that. Lesser players are no doubt intimidated by that.

When I said I hoped Roy O took notes, what I meant was that I hope he watched how Roger sets up hitters. I believe Roger has a specific purpose for every pitch. He may not always achieve his intended purpose, but I think he works not only the hitters, but the umpire too. That is why he struck Bonds out on called strikes that were low pitches, calls that a Roy Oswalt will not get even 5 years from now unless he establishes a persona that says "I know what the hell I'm doing out here and ump, you better get with the program."

Another thing Clemens does is establish the inside of the plate, which can make his pitches to the outside corner damn near unhittable.

Don't get me wrong, Roy is a good pitcher, maybe even a very good pitcher. But at this point in his career, his talent lacks the stuff of greatness. It's his good fortune that he doesn't need to look very far to study it.
