Where is Astacio? |

Any idea when they are calling him up? I think it is time to put him or Qualls in the rotation. Duckworth is a sloppy mess, and Backe, while he plays with a lot of heart (thought he was going to kill Eckstein on that tag) I think he may be better suited in the Pen. Lamb did a good job at 1b, I thought.

give backe the benefit of the doubt, everyone gets lit up now and again.... or you could be duckworth and get lit up every single time you come out to pitch.... purpura, please, trade him, for ANYONE

I agree with liquid on this. You can't give up on Backe after just a handful of starts. He's still new to this and last season he proved that he could do it...we just have to give him the time to see if he can do it consistently. While he hasn't pitched great this season, before yesterday, his ERA was under 4. That's better than a lot of #4 pitchers. Another promising note, his Walk/K ratio is pretty good right now (5 walks to 20 Ks I believe) and though he didn't look so hot yesterday, everyone has bad days. It's how he pitches in the next few starts that matters. If it gets into his head and he can't come back from this, then that's not good. If he puts it behind him and comes back strong, then he'll be fine.

Ok well that answers that. Qualls should take the next spot, and Backe to the pen.

qualls hasnt started in over a year and he is a good setup man in a bullpen that desperately needs him. he shouldnt even be considered for starting duty right now.

Exactly. Qualls is great in the 'pen, and Backe didn't exactly flourish there last year.
i don't mind seeing Duckworth be used for long relief or mop up for a while, though. |

Mop up? Duckworth should get a broom.

Astacio was supposed to pitch on Today but since the rain out they scratched him and are allowing Pettite to pitch since he missed yesterdays game.

Qualls has more pitches. Maybe stamina might play into it but I sincerely doubt it. He has looked very strong in multiple inning appearances. As for Backe, he has more of a go get em type attitude, and if he could unleash the beast, he woul dbe a great bullpen guy. I am not sure which team you guys are watching.

I certainly wouldn't give up on Backe as a starter. All pitchers (even Oswalt in the his initial start this year) have bad games. If it becomes a pattern, then get concerned. Also the occasional bad game is more likely from young pitchers--an unfortunate side effect of learning. Other than his last game, I think Backe has pitched pretty well. Backe blossomed in AAA when he moved from relief work to starting and Qualls improved when he was moved from starting to relieving. That looks to me like a sign that we found their best roles. Some guys like Redding (and other young pitchers) look like they're down on themselves or lackadaisical when their start goes bad. I'm encouraged that Backe was still hustling and trying even after he had given up a bunch of runs.
